A complete cast lead spindle whorl, dating from the Medieval - Post Medieval period, between AD 1400 - 1600 (diameter: 25mm; thickness: 9.5mm; weight: 26.7g). This spindle whorl is circular in plan and bi-conical in section with a central circular drilled hole (diameter of hole: 10mm) for the probable wooden spindle to run through. The artefact is decorated on both sides. On one side, the decoration is very worn although a raised linear ‘VVVV’ pattern is faintly visible, with alternating pellets between these lines. On the opposing side, the artefact is decorated with multiple r…

A slightly incomplete cast lead spindle whorl, dating from the Medieval - Post Medieval period, between AD 1400 - 1600 (diameter: 28.5mm; thickness: 10.5mm; weight: 29.6g). This spindle whorl is circular in plan and bi-conical in section with a central circular drilled hole (diameter of hole: 11mm) for the probable wooden spindle to run through. The artefact is decorated on both sides. On one side, the decoration (although the surface is very worn and corroded) consists of four evenly spaced oval raised pellets with a single raised line to either side. Additionally, there are four po…

A slightly incomplete cast lead spindle whorl, probably dating from the Medieval - Post Medieval period, between AD 1400 - 1600 (diameter: 31.5mm; thickness: 11.5mm; weight: 45.8g). This spindle whorl is circular in plan and bi-conical in section with a central circular drilled hole (diameter of hole: 10mm) for the probable wooden spindle to run through. The artefact is possibly decorated on both sides, although the surface is too worn and corroded to identify any designs clearly. The spindle whorl has a cream patina.

Cast lead weight, possibly a spindle whorl. Biconical with a perforation running through the centre. Outer diameter of 31.5mm, and the central perforation is 6.7mm in diameter. The object is 11.0mm thick, and it has a mass of 43.4g. The object has a pitted light brown/grey surface. Both sides of the weight are decorated with raised pellets and ribs, although these are more pronounced on one side. These weighs are not yet completely understood. It is possible they could have been spindle whorls - at the Austin Friary in Leicester (see Mellor and Pearce, 1981), a decorated whorl was fou…

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is 32.81 mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 8.32 mm in diameter. Both sides of the whorl are decorated, four regularly spaced circular dots in relief, the other with regular lines that expand at an angle from the central perforation to the edge. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This exampl…

A cast medieval lead alloy spindle whorl, hexafoil in shape. It measures 33.37 mm in diameter, 10.2 mm thick with a weight of 38.9 grams. The whorl has a deep grey patina. It has a slight casting ridge along its edge and the main body is made up of six protruding bumps on each side, slightly off-set from one another, which appear sub triangular from above and trapezoidal from the side. On one side there is moulded decoration between raised bumps, perhaps intended to be floral. The whorl has a central hole, 10. 5 mm in diameter. A similar example is recorded on this database as LE…

An extremely worn and deteriorated cast medieval lead alloy spindle whorl, hexafoil in shape. It measures 34.9 mm in diameter, 7.42 mm thick with a weight of 39 grams. The whorl has a cream to white patina. The the main body appears to have been made up of six protruding bumps on each side, though these are now very worn. The whorl has a central hole, 8.9 mm in diameter. Although it is very worn it seems likely that the spindle whorl would originally have resembled some other examples on this database that are in better condition, notably WMID-113010 and LEIC-ED00D3.

A cast, lead alloy spindle whorl, probably dating from the medieval period, 1300-1500AD. It is bi-conical in shape, both upper and lower surfaces being decorated with a pattern of diagonal lines and dots. The spindle whorl is quite worn. It has a central, sub-circular perforation which is 9.5 mm in diameter. The whorl is 28.9 mm in diameter and 17.5 mm thick. It weighs 64.4 grams. It has a pale brown patina. Although it is likely that this example dates from the medieval period, spindle whorls were in use from the Roman period onwards, and it cannot be identified as medieval with …

A moulded lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. The whorl has no decoration which is suggestive of a date and in the absence of an archaeological context dating of undecorated spindle whorls is problematic as they were in use from at least the Roman period until the post-medieval period. A broad date range for this object is therefore given. It measures 22.82 mm in diameter and 4.55 mm thick. It has a slightly off-centre perforation which measures 8 mm. The whorl weighs 13 grams. It has a white colour.
