A crude moulded lead weight, probably a spindle whorl, of uncertain date. The whorl is sub-circular and flat on the top and the bottom although the poor moulding has left it quite uneven. It has a circular hole which is slightly off centre and measures approximately 9.5 mm in diameter. The spindle whorl measures 30.67 mm in diameter, 12.47 mm thick and weighs 65.5 grams. It has a pale grey patina.

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable medieval date. The spindle whorl is circular in plan and bi-conical in profile. It measures 30.1mm in diameter, 9.57mm thick and weighs 33 grams. It has a central perforation which measures 9.6mm in diameter, now filled with dried earth. The whorl is decorated on both sides with linear ridges that radiate from the central hole. The style of decoration may be indicative of a medieval date, although it must be noted that dating of spindle whorls is often problematic when found outside of a secure archaeological context as their function did not alte…

A crude lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. The spindle whorl is circular and measures 30.78 mm in diameter, 10.32 mm thick and weighs 48.7 grams. It has a central perforation which measures 9.1 mm in diameter. The lack of decoration and the crude nature of this example makes dating problematic outside of a secure archaeological context and it may range from Roman to post-medieval in date.

A lead spindle whorl of probable early medieval date, though it may run into the medieval period. The spindle whorl is bi-conical with a central perforation which measures 8.6 mm in diameter. The whorl is decorated on both sides with linear designs, and these appear to be runic script. It is possible that the script is pseudo-runic, and merely intended to imitate a script, as not all letters seem to be genuine Anglo-Saxon runes. If not entirely fictional and imitative, it is possible that the runes may relate to an individual's name, or perhaps are a religious inscription. The spindle…

A moulded lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. The whorl has no decoration which is suggestive of a date and in the absence of an archaeological context dating of undecorated spindle whorls is problematic as they were in use from at least the Roman period until the post-medieval period. A broad date range for this object is therefore given. It measures 22.82 mm in diameter and 4.55 mm thick. It has a slightly off-centre perforation which measures 8 mm. The whorl weighs 13 grams. It has a white colour.

A stone sub-circular spindle whorl (a weight used on a spindle for spinning fibres in textile manufacture) constructed from a smooth dark grey stone. The spindle whorl is not perfectly circular and the central drilled hole is not in the very centre. The spindle whorl measures 33.54 mm in diameter and 15.32 mm thick. Its central hole is 10.1 mm in diameter. It weighs 27.4 grams. Dating spindle whorls is notoriously difficult in the absence of other chronological indicators. This example may date from as early as the Roman period (perhaps even earlier), although it is possibly later.

A cast medieval lead alloy spindle whorl, hexafoil in shape. It measures 30.44 mm in diameter, 10.23 mm thick with a weight of 33.4 grams. The whorl has a deep grey patina. It has a slight casting ridge along its edge and the main body is made up of six protruding bumps on each side, slightly off-set from one another, which appear sub triangular from above and trapezoidal from the side. The whorl has a central hole, approximately 11 mm in diameter. Similar examples are recorded on this database as LEIC-ED00D3 and WMID-113010.
