Mid grey, sandstone spindle whorl, round in plan and flat in profile, with a small perforation in the centre measuring 5.3 mm in diameter. The surface has a number of small, circular marks on both sides. Spindle holes became progressively wider from the Roman period to the 10th century (Walton Rogers, 2007, CBA Research Report). Iron Age and Romano British whorls tend to have holes of 4-8mm in diameter. Therefore this whorl could possibly date from the Romano-British to Medieval period - is difficult to confirm without supporting evidence. A similar object can be seen un…

A complete stone flat or discoidal spindle whorl, of probably the Roman to Post Medieval period dating from c. AD 43 - c. AD 1650. The spindle whorl is broadly triangular in plan and rectangular in cross section. The central hole is circular in shape and has been drilled slightly off central, from both sides. The internal diameter of the hole measures 8.5 mm wide. Both the upper and lower faces are flat. There are scratch marks on the surface of both sides of the object, it is difficult to see whether these form intentional decoration on the object or represents post depositional d…

An incomplete stone flat or discoidal spindle whorl, of Roman to Post Medieval dating (AD 43 - AD 1650). Around 50% of the spindle whorl is present. The spindle whorl is semi-circular, and rectangular in cross section. The central hole is sub circular in shape and has been drilled slightly off central, from both sides. The internal diameter of the hole measures 5.6 mm wide. Both the upper and lower faces are flat. No traces of decoration are present on either the upper or lower faces. The whorl has a diameter of 55.1 mm, with a width of 29.8 mm and is 14.1 mm thick. It weighs 36.6 g (…

A stone sub-circular spindle whorl (a weight used on a spindle for spinning fibres in textile manufacture) constructed from a smooth dark grey stone. The spindle whorl is not perfectly circular and the central drilled hole is not in the very centre. The spindle whorl measures 33.54 mm in diameter and 15.32 mm thick. Its central hole is 10.1 mm in diameter. It weighs 27.4 grams. Dating spindle whorls is notoriously difficult in the absence of other chronological indicators. This example may date from as early as the Roman period (perhaps even earlier), although it is possibly later.

A spindle whorl made of a rusty coloured fine grained sandstone. It is discoid in shape, with one face damaged resulting in the loss of the original surface on that side. It weighs 52.1 grams, with a diameter of 42.76mm. The central perforation is 9.93mm wide. It is 23.00mm thick. Crummy (1983 Colchester Archaeological Report 2: The Roman Small Finds from Excavations in Colchester 1971-9, Colchester Archaeological Trust p. 67) defines a spindle whorl as having a central perforation which has a minimum 5mm diameter, the diameter and thickness is even, the sides are smooth, and…

An incomplete and probable stone spindle whorl, probably dating from the Roman-Medieval period, between AD 43 – 1540 (diameter: 45mm; thickness: 7mm; weight: 12.38g). A flat, circular probable spindle whorl with a slightly off-centre drilled hole (outside diameter: 9mm; inner diameter: 5mm), where the probable wooden spindle would have originally been placed. There is no decoration on either side of the artefact. The probable spindle whorl is in a slightly worn but fair condition.

The spindle whorl is slightly biconical in cross section, but appears at first glance to be conical, except the base is tapered slightly in profile. The surface of the base is slightly concave. In the centre is a vertical circular hole which is 8.49mm diametre. The whorl is circular in plan with a smooth surface, except for two cracks/indentations. The whorl is made of a fine grained, laminated silty mudstone.

The spindle whorl is circular in plan with a central hole. The central hole is 9.22mm diameter. The faces of the whorl are flat and undecorated. The corners are slightly rounded. The spindle whorl is made of a dense, fine-grained stone, which is a light beige colour with a red hue. However the red colour is likely to be influenced by the colour of the soil.

The item is made from a stone which is either limestone or very similar. The stone has a grainy, easily worn texture. The colour of the stone is a dark brown/orange colour. The item is a flat circular disc with a central hole which has vertical sides and is 7.55mm diam. The two faces of the disc are parallel, however there are small indentations, particularly on one surface. It is difficult to determine whether these occurred in antiquity or recently. The edges of the item are rounded.
