A complete lead spindle whorl of unknown exact date (c. AD 43-1700). The object is roughly conical in shape with a flat base and a circular perforation truncating the centre of the object. The whorl is plain and undecorated with a white patina. Plain lead spindle whorls were in use from the Roman period to the present day, therefore without any contextual information it is difficult to apply an exact date. A large number of this type of spindle whorl have been recorded on the PAS database dated from the Roman to Post Medieval periods. Such examples include: DENO-D0AED4; WMID-32510A…

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable medieval date. The spindle whorl is circular in plan and bi-conical in profile. It measures 30.1mm in diameter, 9.57mm thick and weighs 33 grams. It has a central perforation which measures 9.6mm in diameter, now filled with dried earth. The whorl is decorated on both sides with linear ridges that radiate from the central hole. The style of decoration may be indicative of a medieval date, although it must be noted that dating of spindle whorls is often problematic when found outside of a secure archaeological context as their function did not alte…

A complete cast lead spindle whorl, dating from the Medieval - Post Medieval period, between AD 1400 - 1600 (diameter: 25.5mm; thickness: 8mm; weight: 26.4g). This spindle whorl is circular in plan and bi-conical in section with a central circular drilled hole (diameter of hole: 8.5mm) for the probable wooden spindle to run through. The artefact appears to be faintly decorated on both sides with possible linear and pellet decoration, although the artefact is too worn to identify this clearly. The spindle whorl is in a worn and poor condition.
