A complete lead spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date. The whorl is discoidal in shape and sub-rectangular in cross section. The central hole is circular with an internal diameter of 6.63mm. No decoration is present on both surfaces. The whorl is a light grey colour with a slightly uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.  Measurements: diameter 22.7mm, thickness 4.8mm, weight 12.15 grams. Undecorated spindle whorls are very difficult to date precisely…

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is 30.95 mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 10.4 mm in diameter. Both sides of the whorl are decorated, one with three lines of circular dots in relief, the other with regular lines that expand from the central perforation to the edge. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 48.7 gr…

A complete cast lead spindle whorl, dating from the Roman - Post Medieval period, between AD 43 - 1600 (diameter: 27.5mm; thickness: 8mm; weight: 32.2g). This spindle whorl is circular in plan and conical in section with a central circular drilled hole (diameter of hole: 9mm) for the probable wooden spindle to run through. The artefact is decorated on the conical side by three circular and concentric stepped raised platforms, which get smaller in diameter as they reach the central drilled hole at the top. The bottom of the spindle whorl is flat and undecorated. The artefact is in a …
