An incomplete lead spindle whorl. It is disc-shaped/plano-convex with slightly convex faces, rounded edges and wide a central circular hole - diameter c.12mm. One face is decorated with a ring of narrow, raised saltire crosses and the other with a ring of raised widely spaced diagonal, parallel lines. There is a section missing to one side and the central perforation is more worn to this side. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded.

A complete, lead-alloy spindle whorl or weight dating to circa AD 43-1600. It is circular in plan and rectangular in section. In the centre is a circular perforation 7.8mm in diameter. One edge is signifcantly damaged. The top edges are flat and straight.
Spindle whorls can be hard to date accurately as they remained in use for a long period of time. However, however lead alloy spindle whorls of this type are normally attributed to the Medieval period (c. AD 1100 to AD1450).

Lead spindle whorls were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the Post Medieval period and are difficult to date without secure archaeological contextual data.
A similar example is recorded on the database under SUR-4CE7EE and is dated to between 1200-1700 AD.

A complete Roman to post-medieval lead spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface. There is a central circular hole, 8.89mm in diameter. There scratches, marks and a raised pellet on the curved upper surface, although these do not appear to form a distinct pattern. The metal survives in good condition.
Undecorated spindle whorls were in use from the Roman to post-medieval period. The small diameter of the hole may indicate a date towards the earlier of this chronology.

Similar examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the medieval period c.1000-1500. Lead spindle whorls are typical of the Medieval period in which they are widely diffused.

A lead-alloy possibly Medieval spindle whorl, dating to AD 1200-1450. It is biconical with one face slightly flatter then the other; there is a circular hole at its centre. Both faces have been decorated with a cast inscription in relief. The flatter face reads: IO A[...] I A I[...]; the opposite face reads: RIDV[...]RO.

A complete Roman to post-medieval lead spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface. There are transverse scratches on the curved upper surface, although these do not appear to form letters or any distinct pattern. The metal survives in good condition.
Undecorated spindle whorls were in use from the Roman to post-medieval period. The small diameter of the hole may indicate a date towards the earlier of this chronology.

An complete lead medieval to post-medieval spindle whorl. It is formed from two flattened, truncated cones joined at the base with a hole through the centre. Both faces are decorated with a raised line encircling the outer edge with a raised zigzag line forming a ring around the centre. The surface is worn, whitish grey in colour and is pitted in places with corrosion.
Decorated spindle whorls date from the Medieval period up to the 16th century AD.

A somewhat corroded lead-alloy spindle whorl dating to the Medieval or Post-Medieval period, c. 1200-1550. The whorl is circular in plan and biconical in section, with a medium-sized circular aperture at its midpoint. Both faces of the whorl are decorated with intersecting linear motifs, inbetween which are raised pellets. Preserved in rather poor condition with heavily flaking surfaces, it measures c. 31.11mm in diameter, 12.72mm thick at its midpoint, and weighs 26.89g.
