A complete Roman to post-medieval lead spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface. There is a central circular hole, 8.89mm in diameter. There scratches, marks and a raised pellet on the curved upper surface, although these do not appear to form a distinct pattern. The metal survives in good condition. Undecorated spindle whorls were in use from the Roman to post-medieval period. The small diameter of the hole may indicate a date towards the earlier of this chronology. Diameter: 32.06mm, thickness: 10.40mm, weight: 48.26g

An incomplete spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is missing part of one end due to old breaks but is otherwise intact. The whorl appears to be formed from fired grey/brown clay. It is circular in form, oval shaped in section with a large central circular aperture and very smooth, regular surfaces. It measures 21.62mm in length, 30.13mm in external diameter, 11.31mm in internal diameter, and 24.24g in weight. This is a ceramic spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is possible that it dates as early as the Anglo-Saxon period, although a later date cannot be ruled out entirely.

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval or later date. It is conical in form with flattened base and central circular aperture. The outer edges of the whorl have extensive moulded decoration comprising seven vertical ribs spaced around the exterior surfaces running from base to top of the whorl. An uneven transverse band is visible running between the vertical ribs around the base of the whorl. The entire object measures 13.15mm in height, 24.77mm in diameter and 34.98g in weight. This whorl is of probable Medieval date, c.12th-15th centuries AD, although a later or earlier dat…

An undecorated cast lead spindle whorl of Roman or later date. It is coical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces and a neat central circular perforation. The weight measures 29.40mm in diameter, 9.07mm in thickness/height, and weighs 38.85g. Lead weights such as this were probably used as spindle whorls and could date to any point from the Roman period onwards, although the neatness of the central perforation on the current example probably suggests a later Medieval to Post-Medieval date.
