Lead possible spindle whorl, a disc with eight triangular apertures surrounding an integral transverse tube whichapparently tapers towards both ends but is badly squashed on both faces. Closely spaced radial ribs running around the edge on both faces are more visible in some places than in others. Diameter 32mm. Estimated thickness at tube very approximately 16mm. Diameter of central hole c.8mm. Weight g. Perhaps 12th - 15th century. Broadly comparable objects, LVPL-EC512B, LVPL-0DB767, HESH-8B3944 and HESH-78AD38, have been considered Roman to medieval. It exhibits six vertical ridges spaces equidistantly around the sides and a circumferential ridge running around the bottom edge. Medieval lead spindle whorl, bi-convex with many rather irregular radial ribs and a few pellets on both faces. Similar to examples from Meols (Egan, G. in Griffiths et al. 2007, no. 2188 and nos. 2197-2200) and one from an early 16th-cent. context at the Augustinian Friary, Leicester, complete with its wooden spindle (Mellor and Pierce 1981, 139-40, fig.51 no.71). It is possible that the latter object was residual, but it is unlikely to have been very ancient when deposited in the context, in view of its completeness. Late Saxon fine-grained stone spindle-whorl, pale grey with ferrous staining, globular with flattened poles, probably lathe-turned. A small flake was lost in antiquity from the side. Cf. examples from Thetford (Dallas 1993, 121, fig. 132, nos. 4 and 5). Diameter 30.7mm, thickness or height 21.8mm, hole diameter 11mm decreasing slightly to the centre, weight 25.5g, mid 9th - 11th century.
