Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex or conical whorl with a central aperture of diameter 7.1mm; the small size of the hole may admit a Roman date. Alternatively, this may be an Early Medieval whorl of Walton Rogers form A2. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 40-1000. Height: 14.3mm, Diameter: 26mm, Weight: 47.98gms.

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with central moulded and slightly tapered aperture of diameter 12.4mm, surrounded by a prominent ridge probably created at the time of casting. The plano-convex form agrees with Walton Rogers' Form A1, possibly derived from that of cattle femur head whorls, while the large aperture would indicate date later than the Middle Saxon period. The extent of patination, which is patchy and modest on the curved surface and absent from the flat surface, must introduce significant doubt as to dating of this object, unless recent disturbance fr…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 10.5mm, and with a flat rim circa 4mm wide where the two convex halves meet. Patinated overall. Though the identification is probably safe, dating remains uncertain. The characteristics of the whorl could admit dating between the Anglo-Scandinavian period and the Post-Medieval period, most likely at one or the other end of that span. At either period it would have served for plying cord rather than spinning a yarn. Suggested date: Unknown, 850-1600. Diameter: 31.2mm, Thickness: 11.7mm, Weight: 58.98gms.

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast barrel-shaped weight with a central aperture of diameter c.8mm, lightly squashed, with a small nick on one side and patinated overall. A deep cut appears to be recent damage. The mass would admit use as a whorl to spin a fine yarn, and the aperture would possibly permit an early - Roman or Anglo-Saxon - date, though the barrel shaped spindle whorl was equally the dominant high medieval form. The object was reported along with several annular fishing line weights, and might have been pressed into service in that capacity as well, possibly then receivin…

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 5.5mm, possibly Walton Rogers form A1. Patinated overall. The aperture in this case is just below the low end of the range suggested for Anglo-Saxon whorls, so either an alternative identification - perhaps as a counter - or a wider date range might be entertained. The mass at least would qualify this object as a whorl for spinning a fine yarn. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-850. Diameter: 21.7mm, Thickness: 4.9mm, Weight: 13.35gms.

Lead spindle qwhorl. Cast whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 11.2mm. Loss to corrosion or abrasion around the edges leaves the form uncertain, though there is a suspicion of a plano-convex form. The mass suggests this might have been used to spin a yarn. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Post-Medieval, 850-1600. Diameter: 27.4mm, Thickness: 6.3mm, Weight: 19.57gms.

Lead spindle whorl. Cast whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 8mm. The whorl is heavily pitted and possibly part melted, leaving its original form uncertain, and is heavily patinated over these insults. They may arise from use as a child's teething ring, and are features occasionally reported on objects of soft material such as lead, despite the hazards of its ingestion. The pacification of an unquiet child presumably trumped any such considerations Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Post-Medieval, 700-1600. Diameter: 29mm, Thickness: 9.2mm, Weight: 39.33gms.

Lead possible spindle whorl. Disc cut from cast lead sheet with knife-trimmed edges and a central round hole of diameter 6.3mm. Patinated overall. The small aperture would be consistent with a spindle whorl of Roman or Anglo-Saxon date, and both periods saw whorls improvised from other objects in a range of materials, though such a thin form is unusual. The mass would make this apt to spinning a yarn. Suggested date: Unknown, 43-850. Diameter: 35.9mm, Thickness: 2.3mm, Weight: 19.78gms.

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 10.5mm. Very lightly patinated. The form, of Walton Rogers Form B, is common from Anglo-Scandinavian York. A pair of nicks on either side of the hole, along with other dents on the same side of the whorl, may, however, show reuse of the object as a tied weight with tying notches. This could have been be significantly later than the manufacture of the object. Such reuse may have washed off a denser coat of patina from this object. Suggested date: Unknown, Early Medieval to Post-Medieval. …

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded tapered aperture of diameter 10-10.5mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A1, and with shrinkage lines suggesting manufacture in an open mould; patinated. The spindle hole size could point to an Anglo-Scandinavian date; however, the flattened rim distinguishes this from other whorls of this form, and might leave open the possibility of this being a copy or partial copy [i.e. using half of a biconical whorl as a master] of a later type. Reported along with two other whorls of probably early medieval date, though whether in close p…
