Lead spindle whorl. Cast conical or plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 8mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A2. A crudely and thinly incised pattern of Vs or chevrons, points uppermost, passes round the wall. Patinated. The spindle hole size might admit a Roman or Anglo-Saxon date while its mass could permit this object to be used to spin a fine yarn. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-850 Diameter: 19.6mm, Thickness: 10.7mm, Weight: 15.93gms

Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex or conical whorl with one flat side and a central moulded aperture tapering from an upper diameter of 8.2mm to a basal diameter of 6.8mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A2. The sides of the whorl are lightly circumferentially ribbed. Patinated. The spindle hole size might admit a Roman or Anglo-Saxon date while its mass could permit this object to be used to spin a fine yarn. The lipping of the upper surface as cast may show it was made in an open mould. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-850 Diameter: 20.9mm, Thickness: 8.4mm, Weight: 13.10gms

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast globular or bun-shaped whorl with opposed flat sides and with a slightly off-centre square moulded aperture of c.8mm square; patinated, with a cut by the hole on one side which might represent a tying notch. The thick patina points to an object of some age. If indeed a whorl – the square hole would be an aberrant feature – the spindle hole size would fall between the ranges accepted for earlier and later parts of the early medieval period. Whorls in other materials acquired lathe-turned globular forms from about the 13th century, which migh…

Lead spindle whorl, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast biconical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10mm. Moulded decoration on one side comprises thirteen or fourteen rays, some converging with their neighbours to form the points of an irregular and incomplete star, and with [usually] a single pellet in each of the compartments so defined. The other side appears to bear fewer lines and pellets in pairs. A moulded circumferential rib marks the meeting of the two halves. Crushed on one side with consequent local distortion. Patinated. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, …

Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.6mm, Walton Rogers form B. A possibly moulded design has been partially carried over to one flat side only, unless these irregularities represent shrinkage in an open mould, and lipping appears on the opposite side. Patinated, and probably lightly distorted. The mass points to a primary function plying cord, if not as a flywheel for some other mechanical purpose. The size of spindle hole could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date, but the possible decoration on one side might rather point to …

Lead spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.2mm, either miscast or more probably part-melted, Walton Rogers form B. Eight wide radial cuts or grooves appear on one side of the whorl: this texture or decoration has recently been noted as a most unusual feature of another whorl reported recently from the immediate vicinity. The spindle hole size could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 1000-1100 Diameter: 27.6mm, Thickness: 9.4mm, Weight: 27.99gms

Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9mm, Walton Rogers form B. Eight deep symmetrically distributed cuts radiate from the hole on the lower side [as cast – perhaps the upper side as used]. Though tidy enough to be deemed decoration, such features are actually rare on whorls of this simple form, and so many such cuts are perhaps an unparalleled feature. They might serve as tying notches, though a primary use as a whorl or a secondary use as a fishing line would usually require only one tying notch. Patinated. The spindle …

Lead spindle whorl. lead cast biconical spindle whorl, radial lines and dots on one side, flower and dots on other. Though the mass is not given it is likely to exceed 50gms, an arbitrary mass beyond which a primary use plying cord may be entertained. Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a moulded central aperture of diameter 11.7mm, Walton Rogers form A1. Shrinkage lines around the hole on the flat side may indicate the object was cast in an open mould. A gouge beside the hole on the flat side might be a tying groove signalling the conversion of whorl to line weight. Patinated. The spindle hole size could admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10mm, Walton Rogers form A1. There is a slight shrinkage line around the hole which may suggest the object was cast in an open mould.
