A medieval lead spindle whorl. It is biconical and has a large central hole. Both faces are decorated with what appears to be moulded pseudo-lettering separated by pellets. The letter 'A' is visible on one side, both the others are more obscure. Thickness: 13mm, Weight: 44g, Diameter: 30mm. Spindle whorls are very difficult to date, but decorated examples such as this one are usually considered to be Medieval. Most decorated spindle whorls have patterns of dots and lines, but there are also other examples with possible inscriptions on the database. Some parallels are LANCUM-DB9DC5 …

Two medieval lead spindle whorls. The upper whorl in the photograph is biconical and has a large circular hole through the centre. One side is decorated with a zig-zag line with a heart-shaped motif in each of the outer angles. No photograph of the other side was given. The lower whorl in the photograph is very worn, but appears to be decorated with a zig-zag line set within a narrow border. The whorl appears to be miscast or damaged.

A Roman to post medieval ceramic spindle whorl, dating tot he period c. AD 43-1700. The spindle whorl is circular in plan, with a central aperture measuring 7.68mm. The fabric is light brown in colour with a pitted surface in places. Faint ridges are present around its circumference. The spindle whorl measures 25.83mm in diameter, 17.10mm in thickness and weighs 13.95g.

A Roman to Early Medieval ceramic spindle whorl dating to the period c. AD 43-850. It is circular in plan with a circular central aperture measuring 8.40mm, and is sub rectangular in cross section. The object is cream in colour with a black patina in places on one side, and a light brown-red patina in places on its other side. The spindle whorl measures 39.85mm in diameter, 15.66mm in thickness and weighs 32.26g.

The object is worn and fairly crude. The front exhibits a flap which is folded over to one side, from the central aperture. The reverse is flat and undecorated, although it exhbits a raised section, sub-triangular in profile, across approximately 20% of its surface. The spindle whorl measures 22.23mm in diameter, 9.83mm in thickness and weighs 30.86g.
