Incomplete and much abraded cast lead or lead alloy bi-convex spindle whorl of Roman to later Medieval date (1 - 1500 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, it measures 25mm diameter, and is 9.6mm thick. There is a miscast circular cast hole which does not extend completely through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre. The diameter of the hole measures 9.2mm. The whorl weighs 23.53 grams. Both sides of the spindle whorl have been decorated with a series of cast high-relief lines which radiate from the central hole. On both faces the ribs are evenly spaced and small si…

Ground stone spindle whorl of probable later prehistoric to later post medieval date (3000 BC - 1500 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, it measures 25.4mm diameter, and is 9.8mm thick. There is a regular slightly hour glass shaped pierced hole through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre. The shape of this hole would suggest that it has been achieved by drilling from each side. The hole measures 4.4mm in diameter. The whorl weighs 9.26 grams. The whorl is undecorated and the edges are worn and slightly abraded. The outer edge is slightly bevelled, although this is…

Ground and polished bi-convex stone spindle whorl of probable later prehistoric to later post medieval date (3000 BC - 1700 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, it measures 44mm length, 40.7mm width and is 12.8mm thick. There is a regular hour glass shaped pierced hole through the whorl and this is set slightly off centre. The shape of this hole would suggest that it has been achieved by drilling from each side. It is likely that this would have been done with a bow drill and sand, which acts as the abrasive. The hole measures 8.2mm in diameter. The whorl weighs 32.38 grams.…

A spindle whorl made from a circular cast lead medieval papal bulla of Pope Urban V (AD 1362-1370). The bulla has been deliberately defaced or reused by piercing/cutting a large circular perforation through the centre. The hole is irregular and positioned off centre, respecting the heads of Peter and Paul and the inscription above. The bulla measures 33.29mm in diameter, the central hole has a diameter of 8.82mm, 5.81mm in thickness, and weighs 35.88g.  The front of the bulla shows the name of the pope, written in the nominative, with his abbreviated title: PP: Pastor …

A complete but heavily abraded and corroded cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Medieval to Post Medieval date (1150 - 1650 AD), most probably Medieval (AD12300 -1600). The spindle whorl was originally broadly circular in plan and bi-convex in cross section. A central hole is present which has a diameter of approximately 11mm in diameter, Both faces of the whorl are decorated - although one face is poorly preserved. The overall design seems to consist of radiating lines which intersect a circumferential ring creating a crude spiderweb patten. A series of cast pellets are present …

A stone spindle whorl of probable later Iron Age or Roman date (400 BC - AD 300). The spindle whorl is circular in plan and rectangular in profile. Through the middle of the whorl is a circular shaped hole set slightly off centre; the hole has straight sides and it has an approximate diameter of 7.5mm. The whorl is undecorated and is relatively unabraded with crisp fresh edges. The whorl is a grey brown colour. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to…
