Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An undatable (but probably Medieval to Post-Medieval) lead spindle whorl or weight, hemi-spherical in shape with a central piercing. It is larger on the flat underside (10.26mm) and smaller on the convex upper face (9.39mm). Much of the surface is actively flaking away and any decoration is now lost. Measures 25.03mm in diameter, stands 7.13mm in height and weighs 19.21g.

A worn and corroded, broadly circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is flat on both surfaces with a rectangular cross-section. It is basic and has suffered corrosion and bending and is 'decorated' with crude angular punch marks all over both surface. The artefact has a large central hole with a diameter of c. 8.8mm. The hole has a ridge around it on both surfaces presumably a product of its creation. The object is c. 4.5mm thick and weighs 21.98g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn…

A worn and corroded, broadly circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is plano-convex, with a trapezoidal cross-section. The top is generally flattened, with one side shallowly angled, possibly as a result of wear. It is basic and has suffered heavy corrosion and some pitting all over. It is seemingly undecorated. The artefact has a central hole with a diameter of c. 8.3mm. The object is 10.3mm thick and weighs 26.53g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindl…

A complete circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is biconvex, with one surface having received steeper bevelling than the other. The top is flattened and the base is slightly concave. It is basic and has suffered corrosion. It is seemingly undecorated. The artefact has a spindle hole with a diameter of 6.4mm. The spindle whorl is 7.9mm thick and weighs 16.01g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5 grams) being used for spinning cotton …

A corroded cast lead spindle whorl or weight of uncertain date. The artefact is circular in plan and has a diameter of 26.1mm and is 7.4mm high. A circular perforation with a diameter of 6.8mm is present at the approximate centre of the artefact. The object is broadly plano convex, with a flat lower surface. The upper has a bevelled edge and a conical centre, forming a ridge or raised ring, that rises from a flatter zone between it and the circumference. The artefact weighs 21.33g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn prod…
