A complete cast lead weight or spindle whorl of unknown period. The object is plano-convex (conical with a flat base). The central hole measures 7.76mm across at the top and 7.86mm across at the base. It is fairly crude and irregular. The general patina of the object is of a pale brown colouring with some darker brown patches especially on the base. It is unclear if this was used generally as a weight, or specifically as a spindle whorl. A damaged, cast lead spindle whorl of the Early Medieval period (AD 850 - 1100). The object is roughly circular with a large circular central perforation measuring 10.21mm to 13.81mm On one side of the perforation is a small run off notch with some marking, suggesting this is part of the casting process perhaps to facilitate its use when spinning yarn. The object is of fairly rough manufacture, with the circumference not being completely circular or even, suggesting it was home-made; there is also evidence of some later damage. A complete lead spindle whorl dating to the medieval period (c. AD1066 - 1500 ). The whorl is slightly biconical and has a central, circular apeture that is 10.53mm in diameter. It is decorated with a pattern of raised dots which are divided into groups of three by regular raised lines and the whorl as a whole is ringed with a raised circle.
