Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: County Durham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast lead spindle whorl of the Medieval to Post Medieval period (c.AD1450-1600). The whorl is circular and bi-conical with a central aperture measuring 10.82mm at the apex and 10.87mm at the base. There is a pattern on both faces of raised pellets, a form of decoration which (the record for similar spindle whorl LVPL-CFC6A8 notes) Ivens et al (1995) assigns to the early Post Medieval period. However, Standley (2016, 278-9) suggests a date range for high/late medieval spindle whorls of this form from the 13th century to before the end of the 15th century, based on…

A worn, lead-alloy spindle whorl of probable Medieval date, AD 1100-1500. The spindle whorl is very abraded and pitted but bears faint traces of pellet decoration. The central aperture measures 10.24mm, suggesting a Medieval date. It measures 27.23mm in diameter, is 7.56mm in width and weighs 24.8g. Standley (2016, 278-9) suggests a date range for high/late medieval spindle whorls of this form from the 13th century to before the end of the 15th century, based on their presence in metalwork assemblages from the River Wear and the deserted settlement of Meols in Merseyside. …

An incomplete, lead alloy, bi-convex, decorated spindle whorl of Medieval date, AD1100 - 1450. The spindle whorl is sub circular in plan, and lentoid in cross section. Both faces are decorated with several raised diagonal lines, creating a 5 pointed star design. In the spaces inside and outside of the star pattern are 7 large pellets. Some of the raised pellets show signs of being reduced in height, probably due to wear or movement in the plough soil A small raised rim is present around the edge of the spindle whorl. The central hole is circular in shape and has an internal diame…

The spindle whorl is 27.56mm in diameter, 10.45mm thick and weighs 27.7g. The perforation is 9.75mm in diameter suggesting a Medieval date when compared with the thicker spindle whorls of this period (Walton Rogers, 1997, p.1…

Complete cast lead spindle whorl, probably of medieval date or early post-medieval date (1100–1600). The object is biconical with a central perforation (10.4mm diameter) extending straight through. The surfaces are a pale green-grey colour and rough/pitted. A moulded decoration is present on both side, consisting of raised radial lines alternating with single raised pellets, although the worn/corroded surface condition has obscured this decoration over much of the object. Lead spindle whorls were uncommon before the medieval period and the relatively large diameter of the …

The object is a cast, cylindrical whorl with a central perforation, which is a little off-centre and measures 10.13mm in diameter. One top edge is very slightly rounded compared to the other. There are two small linear marks on the base, probably from casting. Most surfaces show some pitting. This spindle whorl fits in with Walton Rogers (1997) form B for stone examples. It has a diameter of 28.94mm, is 8.05mm thick and weighs 42.4g. She suggests that this form dates to the late 1…

It is very thin and has a slightly rounded cross-section. One of the faces is decorated with a series of raised lines. The decoration is very similar to biconical spindle whorls of the medieval period, but this example is of a different form. A complete cast lead weight or spindle whorl of unknown period. The object is plano-convex (conical with a flat base). The central hole measures 7.76mm across at the top and 7.86mm across at the base. It is fairly crude and irregular. The general patina of the object is of a pale brown colouring with some darker brown patches especially on the base. It is unclear if this was used generally as a weight, or specifically as a spindle whorl. Walton Rogers (1997, 1731) notes that Iron Age and Roman period whorls have a perforation that ranges from 4-8mm in diameter, whereas Late Ang…

A damaged, cast lead spindle whorl of the Early Medieval period (AD 850 - 1100). The object is roughly circular with a large circular central perforation measuring 10.21mm to 13.81mm On one side of the perforation is a small run off notch with some marking, suggesting this is part of the casting process perhaps to facilitate its use when spinning yarn. The object is of fairly rough manufacture, with the circumference not being completely circular or even, suggesting it was home-made; there is also evidence of some later damage. It measures approximately 27.01mm in diameter, is 5.47mm …
