Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small cast lead alloy bi-conical spindle whorl of indeterminate date. The whorl is roughly cast with what might be the remnants of the casting sprue still in place. The surface appears to have been cast with a zigzag decorative feature and it is now encrusted by a pale cream lead oxide. The central hole has a diameter of 8.95mm. As the find area has only thrown up other coins/artefacts of a medieval to post medieval date, this whorl may be from that same period.

A small lead alloy bi-conical decorated spindle whorl of indeterminate date. The whorl was found in an area where medieval and post medieval coins have been found and thus we may perhaps assume that date range for this whorl. Each side of the whorl is decorated with random angular lines forming triangles and chevrons. The central hole has a diameter of 9.45mm. The surface has the typical pale cream/grey lead oxide patina.

A lead alloy medieval to post medieval spindle whorl with an attached outer plain ring. The ring is attached to the core of the body by four lugs or stays. It is perhaps a deliberate design feature, to extend the mass with a smaller amount of lead? The ring is now crushed into the central boss, which has a vague bi-conical section which is decorated with four distinct joined arches on both sides. The central hole is 10.34mm in diameter and the surface has a grey/cream lead oxidised patina.

A lead alloy spindle whorl of indeterminate date. These ubiquitous lead whorls were is use from the Roman to the post medieval and beyond. This artefact came from a area where other medieval coins have been found and thus may perhaps be medieval in origin. The whorl has a bi-conical undecorated form with a central hole of 8.2mm. It has a pale grey/cream patina.

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl or perhaps a weight, of indeterminate date. Possibly Roman but equally, it may be post medieval. The whorl/weight has an elliptical form and is undecorated. The central hole has a diameter of 5.5mm and the wear pattern appears to be off centre, giving credence to the weight theory, perhaps fishing associated. The surface has considerable scarring with a dull cream patina.

A medieval to post medieval undecorated lead alloy spindle whorl. The whorl has a broadly box shaped section with one side having a raised central rim and the other being flat. The central hole is 9.5mm in diameter and has a dark concretion still in situ which may be the remnant of the 'drop spindle'. Otherwise, the whorl has the dul grey/cream lead oxidation.

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl that is possibly Roman. Always difficult to date, spindle whorls appear right through to the post medieval, however, this whorl was found close to a single Roman coin and a second whorl of similar design and the characteristic 'deep' design may be indicative of a Roman origin. The undecorated whorl has a bi-conical form and a large casting flaw to one side. The central hole has a diameter of 9.25mm. The surface is now covered with a pale cream oxidation.

This is a small and plain spindle whorl from perhaps the Roman period. These whorls are as ever, very difficult to tie down to an age being in use from the Roman to the post medieval. In this case, it was found in the same field as a Roman brooch and another whorl, it may then be Roman in context. The whorl is undecorated and has the typical lead sulphide corrosion, being a pale cream/white
