Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete Medieval to Post Medieval lead-alloy spindle whorl dating to circa AD 1100-1550. It is broadly circular in plan and plano-convex in section. The central hole is circular with an internal diameter of 9.8mm. The piece is heavily worn but appears to have had pitted decoration on the outer face.
Spindle whorls can be hard to date accurately as they remained in use for a long period of time. The weight of the spindle whorl is suggestive of a thick linen or wool fibre being spun, as there is a direct relationship between the weight of the…

An incomplete lead spindle whorl. It is disc-shaped/plano-convex with slightly convex faces, rounded edges and wide a central circular hole - diameter c.12mm. One face is decorated with a ring of narrow, raised saltire crosses and the other with a ring of raised widely spaced diagonal, parallel lines. There is a section missing to one side and the central perforation is more worn to this side. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded.
The use of a spindle whorl in spinning spanned the Iron Age to very early post-medieval periods. Lead examples have been found in 10…

A lead alloy spindle whorl, conical in shape with a flat base, Walton Rogers form A1. The base is 26mm diameter, tapering to 14mm diameter at the top. The central hole is 5mm diameter, and slightly off centre. It is decorated with radial lines forming triangular shapes but these are worn in many areas. It has an even light brown patina. The small diameter of the central hole would suggest an early date, perhaps 9th-11th centuries AD

An early Medieval lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1 dating from AD 850-1000. It has a flat base with a domed and slightly flattened apex and a central hole of 9.3mm in diameter. The object is 27.0mm in diameter, 13.2mm thick, and weighs 45.79g. The whorl has a mid-grey patina.
A similar example is SWYOR-057095. Form A1 whorls are known from AD 500 - 1000, but the size of the central hole (over 9mm) makes a late Saxon date more likely.

An complete lead Iron Age to Post-Medieval biconical spindle whorl. It is formed from two flattened, truncated cones, joined at the base with a narrow circular hole (c.6mm) through the centre (Walton-Rogers Type B3). The surface is worn, whitish grey in colour and pitted in places.
Undecorated spindle whorls of this form were in use from the Iron Age well into the post-medieval period with little change in form and are therefore difficult to date precisely. Walton-Rogers (2007, 24-5) suggests that bi-conical whorls with narrow central holes (

A complete Roman to post-medieval lead spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface. There are transverse scratches on the curved upper surface, although these do not appear to form letters or any distinct pattern. The metal survives in good condition.
Undecorated spindle whorls were in use from the Roman to post-medieval period. The small diameter of the hole may indicate a date towards the earlier of this chronology.
