Lead ?spindle whorl, circular with a central perforation. Flat and plano-convex, the rounded face is decorated with raised ribs, some of which radiate and others which might be pseudo-letters. The dating of these decorated whorls is difficult; suggestions have included Roman, late Anglo-Saxon and medieval, but the last seems most likely.

Irregular perforated weight or spindle-whorl made from chalk. Sub-rectangular with rounded corners when viewed either from the top or the side, it measures 27 x 34 mm and is 15 mm thick. It is either not particularly well made or has suffered some damage, as it has a rather lumpy outline. The circular perforation is a little off-centre and is symmetrically waisted, narrowing slightly to c. 10 mm minimum diameter. Weights like this one are usually interpreted as spindle-whorls, but a rectangular weight would perhaps not make a very good whorl as it would not turn evenly. They canno…

Lead spindle whorl or weight. Tall and plano-convex, the flat oval base measures 20 x 22 mm and has a groove around the central circular perforation. The perforation is 9 mm in diameter both at the base and at the rounded top. The spindle whorl is 16 mm long, and weighs39.14g (1.38 oz). There are some cut marks around the sides at the base, where it looks as if some lead has been shaved off to adjust the shape or weight.

Lead spindle whorl, a thick disc with rounded corners; the corners are more rounded on one face (the top) than on the other. The base has a groove around the central circular perforation, which measures 10 mm in diameter at the base and 9 mm at the top. The whorl is 14 mm thick and 23-24 mm in diameter. Spindle whorl made from chalk, 37 mm in diameter and 13 mm thick. It is a thick disc in shape, with both circular faces slightly convex and the sides gently rounded. The central perforation flares gently from 8 mm at one end to 10 mm at the other. All surfaces are covered with irregularly set concentric grooves, apart from a small area around each end of the perforation. The whorl weighs 21.5g. Whorls are very hard to date.

Decorated lead spindle whorl, biconvex in shape, 26 mm in diameter and 15 mm thick, with a central perforation which flares slightly from 8.5 mm in diameter at one end to 10 mm in diameter at the other. It is decorated with a narrow raised seam around the junction of the two halves, over which are seven relief lozenges. It weighs 40.76g (1.44 oz). There is controversy about the dating of decorated lead spindle whorls - they may possibly be Roman, but are more likely to be medieval.

Decorated lead spindle whorl, biconvex in shape, 30 mm in diameter but only 7 mm thick. The central perforation is 8 mm in diameter at either end, but swells out into concave sides in between. The whorl is decorated on one face with four pairs of transverse lines, forming a cross interrupted by the perforation. In between are indistinct relief motifs. The same pattern may be seen on the other face, but this is even more indistinct. There appears to be some wear on both faces around the perforation which has removed or pushed aside the relief decoration. The whorl weighs 35.2g (1.…

Conical decorated lead spindle whorl. The base is sub-circular, 20-22 mm in diameter, and slightly rounded. The whorl is 10 mm tall, and is decorated with seven vertical ribs with a single pellet at the bottom between each rib. The slightly off-centre perforation is 6 mm in diameter and does not appear to flare. The whorl weighs 20.15g (0.71 oz). There is controversy about the dating of decorated lead spindle whorls - they may possibly be Roman, but are more likely to be medieval.

Small perforated lead weight, perhaps a spindle whorl. It is roughly circular (15-16 mm diameter) and quite thick (8 mm), with rounded edges. The central perforation is oval, and swells out in the centre; it measures 7 x 6 mm at one end and 6 x 5 mm at the other. It weighs 11.38g (0.4 oz).

Circular perforated lead weight or spindle whorl. Vaguely conical, the object is extremely irregular, measuring 19 x 17 mm at the base and standing 12 mm tall. The off-centre perforation is 6 mm in diameter for all of its length. There are two large depressions in the side of the object, one of which has penetrated through to the perforation. There are also three or four dots around the top of the perforation which look almost decorative. The depressions are probably not there to adjust the weight, as it totals 18.07g (0.63 oz).

Spindle whorl made from some kind of stone, probably sandstone but possibly lava. It is globular, with its widest point (35 mm in diameter) not at the midpoint but three-fifths of the way towards one end. It measures 25 mm from one end of the central circular perforation to the other, and the perforation flares from 7 mm at the more pointed end to 9 mm at the more rounded end. There are five grooves around the circumference which were probably made on a lathe. Spindle whorls are difficult to date, but most of those on middle and late Anglo-Saxon sites have lathe-turned grooved deco…

Plano-convex object, perhaps a decorated spindle whorl. It is 22 mm in diameter and 11 mm tall, with a distinctly flat top. The central perforation flares very slightly from 6 mm wide at the top to 7 mm wide at the bottom, and is perhaps more sub-triangular than circular. Both the flat base and the convex upper surface are decorated with ring-and-dot motifs. Around the bottom of the convex face are blind-drilled holes the same size as the rings, and these alternate with nicks cut into the edge. Where there is room between the ring-and-dots these nicks extend into grooves which run …

Lead spindle whorl, 28-29 mm in diameter and 12.5 mm tall, with a central circular perforation which tapers from 12 mm in diameter at the base to 10 mm in diameter at the top. The flattish base originally had a wide groove hollowed out around the perforation, but part of this has been scraped away recently, probably by agricultural machinery. The sides are fairly straight and the top is rounded, with two older scrapes across it.

Lead 'spindle whorl', plano-convex in shape. The maximum diameter is 35 mm close to the base, which has a hollowed-out centre with a perforation in the centre. The perforation is circular and tapers from 13 mm in diameter at the base to 9 mm diameter at the top. The upper part of the object is domed and undecorated, and it is 19 mm tall. Although these objects are known as spindle whorls, this one seems far too large and heavy for this; it may be a general-purpose weight. Undatable.
