Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete ceramic spindle whorl of probable early post-medieval date. The spindle is a flattened globular shape with a central circular hole, c.14mm in diameter. A groove runs around the midpoint of the outer face. It is made from a orange sandy earthenware fabric with angular quartz (<1mm) and red ironstone (<1mm) inclusions. There are traces of a green glaze in places on the surface, but most of this has worn away.. Very similar early post-medieval glazed stoneware spindle whorls imported from the Raeren kilns in Belgium are not uncommon finds, see PAS records: LON-81EDE9, BH

A complete Roman to post-medieval lead spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface. There are transverse scratches on the curved upper surface, although these do not appear to form letters or any distinct pattern. The metal survives in good condition. Undecorated spindle whorls were in use from the Roman to post-medieval period. The small diameter of the hole may indicate a date towards the earlier of this chronology. Diameter: 31.70mm, thickness: 6.37mm, weight: 38.63g

A lead possibly Medieval to Post medieval spindle whorl. It is plano-convex in shape with a sub-cylindrical perforation in the centre, which slightly tapers towards the convex edge. The sides are decorated with two longitudinal close raised lines. Given the absence of further details visible it is difficult to assign a close date. It is dated to AD 1000-1800 Diameter: 29.75 mm Height: 10.42 mm Thickness: 9.90 mm Weight: 39.82 g

A complete lead Roman to post-medieval spindle whorl. The object is discoidal with rounded edges and perforated with a wide hole in the centre. This hole appears slightly worn at one side suggesting that the object was suspended at some point. The surface is hevaily pitted and scratched. Because the object lacks diagnostic features it could easily date from the Roman to Modern period. Diameter: 26.78mm, diameter of hole: 12.92mm, thickness: 12.76mm, weight: 35.51g

A complete lead medieval or post-medieval spindle whorl or weight. It is roughly hemispherical in shape with a circular hole through the centre. It survives in fairly condition with a pale oxidised patina, although the surfaces are heavily scratched and pitted. The object may have functioned as a weight, or more probably a spindle whorl. Most lead spindle whorls are Medieval or early Post-Medieval in date, although they were in use for a long period of time and when undecorated, like this example, are difficult to date more closely. Diameter: 17.8mm, thickness: 4.9mm, weight: 9.73g

A complete lead medieval to early post-medieval spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface with a small circular hole through the centre. There is a small amount of damage to one side of the hole. Its undiagnostic nature makes it difficult to date precisely. A cast lead spindle whorl. It is biconical in form with central circular aperture, and has moulded decoration on both faces. This comprises single continuous zig-zag lines on both faces, between a slightly raised circumferential band and band or collar around the central aperture. The entire object measures 21.21mm in diameter, 12.42mm in thickness, and 19.31g in weight. This is a decorative lead spindle whorl. It may be of any date from the Roman period onward, although a date range in the Medieval period is probably most likely.

The other has wider spaced radiating diagonal lines with pellets in the voids towards the outer edge. This spindle whorl measures 32.56mm in diameter, 20.62mm in height, 86.55g in weight. There are similar examples recorded on the PAS database (LVPL-83D679) (LVPL-DF1B11). This is a relatively simple cast lead spindle whorl that could be of any date from the Roman period onwards.

A cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain Roman or later date. It is conical in form, undecorated and with a large central circlar aperture that is currently encrusted with soil. The entire object measures 24.46mm in diameter, 8.76mm in height and 23.59g in weight. This spindle whorl may be of any date from the Roman period onward, altough a Medieval to Post-Medieval date seems most plausible.

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval or later date. It is conical in form with slightly concave back face and flattened upper surface. At its centre is a large circular perforation. The exterior surfaces of the whorl appear to have slight moulded decoration, perhaps simply diagonal strokes but the precise form is uncertain due to the preservation of the object. It measures 29.26mm in diameter, 9.24mm in thickness and 35.48g in weight. This whorl is likely to date to the Medieval or later periods, perhaps c.13th-17th centuries AD.

A decorated cast lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval or later date. It is conical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces and a central circular perforation. The exterior surfaces have moulded decoration comprising multiple vertical ribs radiating from the central perforation to outer edge. It measures 25.99m in diameter, 7.22mm in height and 24.02g in weight. Spindle whorls such as this are difficult to date precisely and the form had continued usage over a long period of time. A cast lead spindle whorl. It is conical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces, and with a central circular perforation. The upper surfaces have moulded decoration comprising a series of unevenly spaced diagonal ridges, possibly intended to be in pairs, and numbering at least seven in total. It measures 35.53mm in diameter, 12.88mm in height and weighs 82.22g. Simple lead weights such as this were utilised as spindle whorls over a long period of time from the Roman period onwards. A worked stone spindle whorl of uncertain date. It has been formed from a pale white stone, possibly limestone or similar, and is now in two joining halves due to old breaks. The whorl is circular in form, oval in section and with a slightly faceted outer surface that has produced an almost flattened rectangular circumferential rib. At the centre of the object is a circular aperture, which is narrower at one end (top?) than the other, the narrow end slightly countersunk suggesting that when produced the aperture was drilled from both directions. It measures 29.75mm in diameter, 17.26m…
