A cast lead spindle whorl of Medieval date. It is biconical in shape with flattened top and bottom and large circular central perforation. There is a prominent moulded ridge around the circumference of the whorl and both upper and lower faces have moulded decoration. One face is divided into four segments by four vertical ridges radiating from the perforation to the exterior edge. In two of the segments are the remains of the letters A (chevron barred) and I, but it is uncertain whether the remaining two segments also originally had lettering. It is unclear whether the lettering origin…

A lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is conical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces, undecorated and with a central circular perforation. It measures 28.93mm in diameter, 11.42mm in height and weighs 50.74g. Simple lead weights such as this were utilised as spindle whorls over a long period of time from the Roman period onwards. The relatively fine manufacture of this object, and particularly the neatly drilled perforation, might indicate a Post-Roman date in the Medieval to Post-Medieval periods.

A circular lead weight 23.5mm in diameter and 14mm in maximum thickness, with a central piercing of about 5.5mm. The upper and lower surfaces are neatly domed, and meet at a carination or keel which surrounds the middle of the object. It is probably as Anglo-Saxon spindle-whorl, but might have some other function.

Likely to be a complete cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is conical in from and sub-circular in plan. There is a significant circular hole at its centre. The base is smooth but the upper surface is pocked. The precise function is uncertain as it could conceivably be a weight or line sinker. Similarly, there is little diagnostic with which to date it meaning that it could date from the Roman period onwards. It measures 24.17mm in diameter, 8.10mm in height and weighs 17.53g.

A decorated cast lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval or later date. It is conical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces and a central circular perforation. The exterior surfaces have moulded decoration comprising multiple vertical ribs radiating from the central perforation to outer edge. It measures 25.99m in diameter, 7.22mm in height and 24.02g in weight. Spindle whorls such as this are difficult to date precisely and the form had continued usage over a long period of time. The decorative elements of the current example suggest a probable Medieval date, although an ear…

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval or later date. It is conical in form with slightly concave back face and flattened upper surface. At its centre is a large circular perforation. The exterior surfaces of the whorl appear to have slight moulded decoration, perhaps simply diagonal strokes but the precise form is uncertain due to the preservation of the object. It measures 29.26mm in diameter, 9.24mm in thickness and 35.48g in weight. This whorl is likely to date to the Medieval or later periods, perhaps c.13th-17th centuries AD.

A bi-conical lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. It has a central circular aperture. Both faces have moulded decoration consisting of diagonal lines with dots and crosses in between them. This spindle whorl measures 31.55mm in diameter, 13.40mm in height, 50.74g in weight. There is a similar example from Suffolk recorded on the PAS database (SF10844). This is a relatively simple cast lead spindle whorl that could be of any date from the Roman period onwards.

A cast lead spindle whorl. It is biconical in form with central circular aperture, and has moulded decoration on both faces. This comprises single continuous zig-zag lines on both faces, between a slightly raised circumferential band and band or collar around the central aperture. The entire object measures 21.21mm in diameter, 12.42mm in thickness, and 19.31g in weight. This is a decorative lead spindle whorl. It may be of any date from the Roman period onward, although a date range in the Medieval period is probably most likely.

A somewhat corroded lead-alloy spindle whorl dating to the Medieval or Post-Medieval period, c. 1200-1550. The whorl is circular in plan and biconical in section, with a medium-sized circular aperture at its midpoint. Both faces of the whorl are decorated with intersecting linear motifs, inbetween which are raised pellets. Preserved in rather poor condition with heavily flaking surfaces, it measures c. 31.11mm in diameter, 12.72mm thick at its midpoint, and weighs 26.89g. An complete lead Iron Age to Post-Medieval biconical spindle whorl. It is formed from two flattened, truncated cones, joined at the base with a narrow circular hole (c.6mm) through the centre (Walton-Rogers Type B3). The surface is worn, whitish grey in colour and pitted in places. Undecorated spindle whorls of this form were in use from the Iron Age well into the post-medieval period with little change in form and are therefore difficult to date precisely. Walton-Rogers (2007, 24-5) suggests that bi-conical whorls with narrow central holes (
