Lead alloy, circular, plano-convex undecorated cast spindle whorl. The central circular perforation tapers slightly, either by design or wear, from 9.2mm diameter uppermost to 10.1mm at the base. Spindle whorls are very much utility devices providing a simple spinning-inertia function when manually turning fibres into yarn. Their use spans the Iron Age, Roman, Early-Medieval, Medieval and early Post-Medieval periods, but in metal are more typically Early Medieval to Post Medieval. The hand spindle on which they were used continued in use at least until the 16th century in Norfolk (Mar…

An complete lead Iron Age to Post-Medieval biconical spindle whorl. It is formed from two flattened, truncated cones, joined at the base with a narrow circular hole (c.6mm) through the centre (Walton-Rogers Type B3). The surface is worn, whitish grey in colour and pitted in places. Undecorated spindle whorls of this form were in use from the Iron Age well into the post-medieval period with little change in form and are therefore difficult to date precisely. Walton-Rogers (2007, 24-5) suggests that bi-conical whorls with narrow central holes (

A complete Roman to post-medieval lead spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface. There are transverse scratches on the curved upper surface, although these do not appear to form letters or any distinct pattern. The metal survives in good condition. Undecorated spindle whorls were in use from the Roman to post-medieval period. The small diameter of the hole may indicate a date towards the earlier of this chronology. A complete lead medieval or post-medieval spindle whorl or weight. It is roughly hemispherical in shape with a circular hole through the centre. It survives in fairly condition with a pale oxidised patina, although the surfaces are heavily scratched and pitted. The object may have functioned as a weight, or more probably a spindle whorl. Most lead spindle whorls are Medieval or early Post-Medieval in date, although they were in use for a long period of time and when undecorated, like this example, are difficult to date more closely. Lead spindle whorl of medieval or post medieval date (c. AD 1066 - 1700). Domed in form with a circular base, slightly faceted sides and off-centre vertical circular perforation. The based exhibits a circumferential groove. Spindle whorls can be difficult to date as, with some exceptions, the general form seems to have changed little over time. Spindle whorls of this form are generally assigned a medieval to post medieval date range.
