An incomplete lead spindle whorl. It is disc-shaped/plano-convex with slightly convex faces, rounded edges and wide a central circular hole - diameter c.12mm. One face is decorated with a ring of narrow, raised saltire crosses and the other with a ring of raised widely spaced diagonal, parallel lines. There is a section missing to one side and the central perforation is more worn to this side. The surface of the metal is heavily corroded.  The use of a spindle whorl in spinning spanned the Iron Age to very early post-medieval periods. Lead examples have been found in 10…

A complete probable Early Medieval lead spindle whorl dating to circa AD 500-850. Cast in one piece it is comprised of a flat base with steep, conical walls and a central perforation with a diameter of 6.8mm Though difficult to date without secure stratigraphic information, spindle whorls of this form are consistent with Walton Rogers form A1-2, dating to the early to middle Saxon period (2007).

A probable Medieval to Post Medieval lead-alloy spindle whorl dating to circa AD 1100-1600. It is discoidal in plan and biconical in section. It has a central, circular perforation 11mm in diameter. The surfaces are undecorated.  Spindle whorls can be hard to date accurately as they were in use for a long period of time, however lead alloy spindle whorls of this type are normally attributed to the Medieval to Post-Medieval periods. An early Medieval lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1 dating from AD 850-1000. It has a flat base with a domed and slightly flattened apex and a central hole of 9.3mm in diameter. The object is 27.0mm in diameter, 13.2mm thick, and weighs 45.79g. The whorl has a mid-grey patina.  A similar example is SWYOR-057095. Form A1 whorls are known from AD 500 - 1000, but the size of the central hole (over 9mm) makes a late Saxon date more likely.
