Lead ?spindle whorl, circular with a central perforation. Flat and plano-convex, the rounded face is decorated with raised ribs, some of which radiate and others which might be pseudo-letters. The dating of these decorated whorls is difficult; suggestions have included Roman, late Anglo-Saxon and medieval, but the last seems most likely.

Perforated circular weight, perhaps a spindle whorl, made of a mid grey lead. 14 mm thick and 25mm in diameter, one face is flatter than the other and has a trace of a circular groove, so is presumably the base. One edge has been recently damaged. The perforation runs straight through with no tapering and is 10-11 mm in diameter. Weighs 48.91g (1.7 oz).

Lead spindle-whorl which has perhaps been modified or distorted through heat. It looks as if it was originally a plano-convex whorl of c. 27 mm diameter, with a central circular perforation of 9 mm diameter which tapers slightly towards the curved face. Maximum thickness 5 mm. The whorl has then been melted and squashed to give it two straight edges and an almost trapezoidal shape. On the underside there are thickenings resulting from the squashing. A blob of lead projects from the shortest side. There appears to be no function to these modifications, and such a weight would not …

Irregular perforated weight or spindle-whorl made from chalk. Sub-rectangular with rounded corners when viewed either from the top or the side, it measures 27 x 34 mm and is 15 mm thick. It is either not particularly well made or has suffered some damage, as it has a rather lumpy outline. The circular perforation is a little off-centre and is symmetrically waisted, narrowing slightly to c. 10 mm minimum diameter. Weights like this one are usually interpreted as spindle-whorls, but a rectangular weight would perhaps not make a very good whorl as it would not turn evenly. They canno…

Well-made lead spindle whorl, 35 mm in diameter and 11 mm thick. Plano-convex in shape (with one flat face and one rounded face), the flat face is actually slightly concave as it slopes up towards the central perforation. This flares from 10.5 mm in diameter at the rounded face to 13.5 mm in diameter at the flat face. It weighs 77.4g, which is rather heavy for a spindle whorl; these weighs may have had different uses as well. Although their date is unknown, there is a suspicion that they may be post-medieval.

Lead spindle whorl or weight. Tall and plano-convex, the flat oval base measures 20 x 22 mm and has a groove around the central circular perforation. The perforation is 9 mm in diameter both at the base and at the rounded top. The spindle whorl is 16 mm long, and weighs39.14g (1.38 oz). There are some cut marks around the sides at the base, where it looks as if some lead has been shaved off to adjust the shape or weight.
