Record ID: SWYOR-DB28A0
Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An early Medieval lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1 dating from AD 850-1000. It has a flat base with a domed and slightly flattened apex and a central hole of 9.3mm in diameter. The object is 27.0mm in diameter, 13.2mm thick, and weighs 45.79g. The whorl has a mid-grey patina.
A similar example is SWYOR-057095. Form A1 whorls are known from AD 500 - 1000, but the size of the central hole (over 9mm) makes a late Saxon date more likely.

A cast lead spindle whorl of Medieval date. It is biconical in shape with flattened top and bottom and large circular central perforation. There is a prominent moulded ridge around the circumference of the whorl and both upper and lower faces have moulded decoration. One face is divided into four segments by four vertical ridges radiating from the perforation to the exterior edge. In two of the segments are the remains of the letters A (chevron barred) and I, but it is uncertain whether the remaining two segments also originally had lettering. It is unclear whether the lettering origin…

An incomplete pottery spindle whorl of probable Roman or Early-Medieval date. Half of the object is missing due to old breaks. It is formed from a sherd of very micaceous Roman grey ware vessel with roughly rounded edges giving an approximately circular form. At the centre of the object is an incomplete circular perforation where the whorl would originally have been suspended. It measures 39.69mm in surviving width, 22.54mm in surviving length, 6.55mm in thickness, and weighs 7.05g. A lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is conical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces, undecorated and with a central circular perforation. It measures 28.93mm in diameter, 11.42mm in height and weighs 50.74g. Simple lead weights such as this were utilised as spindle whorls over a long period of time from the Roman period onwards. The relatively fine manufacture of this object, and particularly the neatly drilled perforation, might indicate a Post-Roman date in the Medieval to Post-Medieval periods.

Lead ?spindle whorl, circular with a central perforation. Flat and plano-convex, the rounded face is decorated with raised ribs, some of which radiate and others which might be pseudo-letters. Lead spindle-whorl which has perhaps been modified or distorted through heat. It looks as if it was originally a plano-convex whorl of c. 27 mm diameter, with a central circular perforation of 9 mm diameter which tapers slightly towards the curved face. Maximum thickness 5 mm. The whorl has then been melted and squashed to give it two straight edges and an almost trapezoidal shape. On the underside there are thickenings resulting from the squashing.
