Spindle whorl made from some kind of stone, probably sandstone but possibly lava. It is globular, with its widest point (35 mm in diameter) not at the midpoint but three-fifths of the way towards one end. It measures 25 mm from one end of the central circular perforation to the other, and the perforation flares from 7 mm at the more pointed end to 9 mm at the more rounded end. There are five grooves around the circumference which were probably made on a lathe. Spindle whorls are difficult to date, but most of those on middle and late Anglo-Saxon sites have lathe-turned grooved deco…

A lead spindle whorl of uncertain Roman or later date. It is conical in form with crudely flattened top and bottom surfaces, undecorated and with a central circular perforation. It measures 21.86mm in diameter, 7.80mm in height and weighs 15.73g. Simple lead weights such as this were utilised as spindle whorls over a long period of time and the current example may date to any point from the Roman period onwards.

A perforated lead weight or spindle whorl. It is circular with a slightly irregular circumference measuring 25.3mm in diameter. It is plano-convex in shape and the the central perforation is approximately circular and 8.5mm in diameter. The spindle whorl is 5.15mm in height and weighs 16.87g. It is not possible to put a date on this object, but if this is a spindle whorl rather than a weight it could date to any time within the medieval period.

Likely to be a complete cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is conical in from and sub-circular in plan. There is a significant circular hole at its centre. The base is smooth but the upper surface is pocked. The precise function is uncertain as it could conceivably be a weight or line sinker. Similarly, there is little diagnostic with which to date it meaning that it could date from the Roman period onwards. It measures 24.17mm in diameter, 8.10mm in height and weighs 17.53g.

A cast lead weight or spindle whorl of probable Medieval or later date. It is oval in form, D-shaped in section with central circular aperture. There is no decoration on any of the surfaces and the entire object measures 28.60mm in diameter, 8.44mm in thickness and 34.54g in weight. This is a simple cast lead weight, possibly for use as a spindle whorl. Its precise date range is uncertain and it may belong in any period from the Roman onwards, although a later Medieval to Post-Medieval date seems most plausible.

A complete lead spindle whorl or weight of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is hemispherical in shape with a narrow circular hole through the centre. The rounded outer face is decorated with a very unclear raised motif of some kind. The surface is worn, whitish grey in colour and pitted in places. Decorated spindle whorls are likely to date from the Medieval period up to the 16th century, although its basic design means that it could also simply have functioned as a weight of some kind.
