Record ID: SF-2497E5
Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead weight or spindle whorl of probable Medieval or later date. It is oval in form, D-shaped in section with central circular aperture. There is no decoration on any of the surfaces and the entire object measures 28.60mm in diameter, 8.44mm in thickness and 34.54g in weight. This is a simple cast lead weight, possibly for use as a spindle whorl. Its precise date range is uncertain and it may belong in any period from the Roman onwards, although a later Medieval to Post-Medieval date seems most plausible.

Likely to be a complete cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is conical in from and sub-circular in plan. There is a significant circular hole at its centre. The base is smooth but the upper surface is pocked. The precise function is uncertain as it could conceivably be a weight or line sinker. Similarly, there is little diagnostic with which to date it meaning that it could date from the Roman period onwards. It measures 24.17mm in diameter, 8.10mm in height and weighs 17.53g.

A cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is circular in form, conical in section with flattened top and bottom edges. It has an off-centred circular perforation and on the front face are what appear to be the remains of moulded geometric decoration, its precise form uncertain due to the preservation of the object. The entire object measures 30.63mm in diameter, 9.37mm in diameter at perforation, 8.23mm in height/thickness, and 43.65g in weight. This is a relatively simple cast lead spindle whorl that could be of any date from the Roman period onwards, although a later date rang…

A cast lead spindle whorl. It is conical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces, and with a central circular perforation. The upper surfaces have moulded decoration comprising a series of unevenly spaced diagonal ridges, possibly intended to be in pairs, and numbering at least seven in total. It measures 35.53mm in diameter, 12.88mm in height and weighs 82.22g. Simple lead weights such as this were utilised as spindle whorls over a long period of time from the Roman period onwards. The relatively fine manufacture of this object including its decorative elements, and particul…

A worked stone spindle whorl of uncertain date. It has been formed from a pale white stone, possibly limestone or similar, and is now in two joining halves due to old breaks. The whorl is circular in form, oval in section and with a slightly faceted outer surface that has produced an almost flattened rectangular circumferential rib. At the centre of the object is a circular aperture, which is narrower at one end (top?) than the other, the narrow end slightly countersunk suggesting that when produced the aperture was drilled from both directions. It measures 29.75mm in diameter, 17.26m…
