A complete probable Roman lead-alloy spindle whorl dating to circa AD 43-41. It is discoidal in plan and plano-convex in section with broadly straight edges. The faces are undecorated. The central perforation is is small, 6mm in diameter, indicative of a pre-Early Medieval date. Consequently, a broad Roman date is suggested.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead Roman to post-medieval spindle whorl or weight. The object is discoidal with rounded edges and is perforated with a wide hole in the centre. The surface is hevaily pitted and scratched. Because the object lacks diagnostic features it could easily date from the Roman to Modern period. It may have functioned as a spindle whorl, but is slightly irregular in shape and so may simply have been a weight. Diameter: 22.45mm, thickness: 8.34mm, weight: 22.92g

An incomplete pottery spindle whorl of probable Roman or Early-Medieval date. Half of the object is missing due to old breaks. It is formed from a sherd of very micaceous Roman grey ware vessel with roughly rounded edges giving an approximately circular form. At the centre of the object is an incomplete circular perforation where the whorl would originally have been suspended. It measures 39.69mm in surviving width, 22.54mm in surviving length, 6.55mm in thickness, and weighs 7.05g. This spindle whorl is perhaps of Roman date, although it is equally possible that it was created in the …
