A cast lead spindle whorl. It is conical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces, and with a central circular perforation. The upper surfaces have moulded decoration comprising a series of unevenly spaced diagonal ridges, possibly intended to be in pairs, and numbering at least seven in total. It measures 35.53mm in diameter, 12.88mm in height and weighs 82.22g. Simple lead weights such as this were utilised as spindle whorls over a long period of time from the Roman period onwards. The relatively fine manufacture of this object including its decorative elements, and particul…

A cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date. It is circular in form, conical in section with flattened top and bottom edges. It has an off-centred circular perforation and on the front face are what appear to be the remains of moulded geometric decoration, its precise form uncertain due to the preservation of the object. The entire object measures 30.63mm in diameter, 9.37mm in diameter at perforation, 8.23mm in height/thickness, and 43.65g in weight. This is a relatively simple cast lead spindle whorl that could be of any date from the Roman period onwards, although a later date rang…

An incomplete pottery spindle whorl of probable Roman or Early-Medieval date. Half of the object is missing due to old breaks. It is formed from a sherd of very micaceous Roman grey ware vessel with roughly rounded edges giving an approximately circular form. At the centre of the object is an incomplete circular perforation where the whorl would originally have been suspended. It measures 39.69mm in surviving width, 22.54mm in surviving length, 6.55mm in thickness, and weighs 7.05g. This spindle whorl is perhaps of Roman date, although it is equally possible that it was created in the …
