an early medieval or later stone spindle whorl. It is circular with a hole pierced through the centre. One side is flattened around the hole. The outer surface is smooth and has signs of wear including some pitting. It is 29.54mm in diameter and 21.46mm in height, and weighs 23.45g. Spindle whorls of this type were current from the Anglo-Saxon period onwards, but there are no associations to qualify the date of this piece.

Worn, lead spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is circular in plan and oval in section. It has a central circular perforation through its length. The object has been cast with a series of crude raised dots around the circumference of one surface and presumably the opposite surface, though this is worn beyond recognition. The lead has a chalky white appearance. The spindle whorl is 27.68mm in diameter, 13.02mm thick and weighs 58.95g. This spindle whorl could be Roman to medieval in date as decorated spindle whorls have been discovered in Roman, Saxon and Medieval contexts and there is no …

A lead complete spindle whorl of Roman or later date, the precise date of unstratified spindle whorls is very difficult to ascertain as their form changes very little through time. This example is conical in shape with a central circular hole and measures c31.5mm in base diameter and 11mm in height, the central hole is 9.2mm in diameter. There are several vertical grooves on the outer face, these are randomn and may be due to damage and do not appear to be intentional decoration.

It measures 12.7mm in height and c23.5mm in base diameter, the central hole is c8.2mm in diameter. The spindle whorl is cracking on its outer surfaces. There are faint traces of vertical straight grooves down the sides of the spindle whorl but they are very worn and often obscured by the cracking.

A lead spindle whorl which could be Roman or later in date as they do not change in form through time. This example is cone-shaped with a central circular hole, it measures 18.7mm in height and 27.4mm in base diameter. The central hole is 5.9mm in diameter at the base and 4.5mm in diameter at the tapering terminal. The outer face of the spindle whorl is rough and there are several small rectangular indentations which form a transverse row, these may be intentional decoration although due to wear it is difficult to be sure.

A worn and incomplete lead spindle whorl which could be Roman or later in date. It is a flattened cone in shape with a part of the flat base missing due to an old break, it has a circular central hole. It is c23mm in diameter and 8.9mm in thickness and the central hole is 7mm in diameter. All faces are irregular and have grooves and incisions across them, these appear to be random and it is impossible to know if they are intentional or created by damage or use.
