An complete lead Iron Age to Post-Medieval biconical spindle whorl. It is formed from two flattened, truncated cones, joined at the base with a narrow circular hole (c.6mm) through the centre (Walton-Rogers Type B3). The surface is worn, whitish grey in colour and pitted in places. Undecorated spindle whorls of this form were in use from the Iron Age well into the post-medieval period with little change in form and are therefore difficult to date precisely. Walton-Rogers (2007, 24-5) suggests that bi-conical whorls with narrow central holes (

A complete Roman to post-medieval lead spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface. There are transverse scratches on the curved upper surface, although these do not appear to form letters or any distinct pattern. The metal survives in good condition. Undecorated spindle whorls were in use from the Roman to post-medieval period. The small diameter of the hole may indicate a date towards the earlier of this chronology. Diameter: 31.70mm, thickness: 6.37mm, weight: 38.63g
