A complete Medieval to Post Medieval lead-alloy spindle whorl dating to circa AD 1100-1550. It is broadly circular in plan and plano-convex in section. The central hole is circular with an internal diameter of 8.65mm. The piece is heavily worn.
Spindle whorls can be hard to date accurately as they remained in use for a long period of time. A complete cast lead or lead-alloy spindle whorl of probable medieval date (c.AD 1200-1500).
Description: The object is circular in plan and biconical in profile with curved faces and a large central perforation. The central hole has a larger diameter at one end than the other. The edges of the hole are ragged and worn. Both faces are undecorated with a raised join where the two halves meet. The object has a mid-grey patina.
