Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead Roman to post-medieval spindle whorl. The object is discoidal with rounded edges and perforated with a wide hole in the centre. This hole appears slightly worn at one side suggesting that the object was suspended at some point. The surface is hevaily pitted and scratched. Because the object lacks diagnostic features it could easily date from the Roman to Modern period. Diameter: 26.78mm, diameter of hole: 12.92mm, thickness: 12.76mm, weight: 35.51g

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete lead medieval or post-medieval spindle whorl or weight. It is roughly hemispherical in shape with a circular hole through the centre. It survives in fairly condition with a pale oxidised patina, although the surfaces are heavily scratched and pitted. The object may have functioned as a weight, or more probably a spindle whorl. Most lead spindle whorls are Medieval or early Post-Medieval in date, although they were in use for a long period of time and when undecorated, like this example, are difficult to date more closely. Diameter: 17.8mm, thickness: 4.9mm, weight: 9.73g

A complete lead medieval to early post-medieval spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface with a small circular hole through the centre. There is a small amount of damage to one side of the hole. Its undiagnostic nature makes it difficult to date precisely. Most spindle whorls are Medieval or early Post-Medieval in date, although they were in use for a long period of time. Diameter: 24.68mm, thickness: 9.72mm, weight: 28.90g

A complete lead spindle whorl or weight of Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is hemispherical in shape with a narrow circular hole through the centre. The rounded outer face is decorated with a very unclear raised motif of some kind. The surface is worn, whitish grey in colour and pitted in places. Decorated spindle whorls are likely to date from the Medieval period up to the 16th century, although its basic design means that it could also simply have functioned as a weight of some kind. Diameter: 26.01mm, Thickness: 13.93mm, Weight: 52.71g

A cast lead spindle whorl. It is biconical in form with central circular aperture, and has moulded decoration on both faces. This comprises single continuous zig-zag lines on both faces, between a slightly raised circumferential band and band or collar around the central aperture. The entire object measures 21.21mm in diameter, 12.42mm in thickness, and 19.31g in weight. This is a decorative lead spindle whorl. It may be of any date from the Roman period onward, although a date range in the Medieval period is probably most likely.

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval or later date. It is conical in form with slightly concave back face and flattened upper surface. At its centre is a large circular perforation. The exterior surfaces of the whorl appear to have slight moulded decoration, perhaps simply diagonal strokes but the precise form is uncertain due to the preservation of the object. It measures 29.26mm in diameter, 9.24mm in thickness and 35.48g in weight. This whorl is likely to date to the Medieval or later periods, perhaps c.13th-17th centuries AD.

A decorated cast lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval or later date. It is conical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces and a central circular perforation. The exterior surfaces have moulded decoration comprising multiple vertical ribs radiating from the central perforation to outer edge. It measures 25.99m in diameter, 7.22mm in height and 24.02g in weight. Spindle whorls such as this are difficult to date precisely and the form had continued usage over a long period of time. The decorative elements of the current example suggest a probable Medieval date, although an ear…

A lead spindle whorl of Medieval date. It is a biconical whorl with large central perforation, which does not appear to taper. Both sides of the whorl are decorated, with slightly raised pellets and ribs radiating from the centre on one side. The other side is less clear, but includes four regularly spaced raised decorative shapes, three of which are T-shaped and one triangular, interspersed with pellets. The spindle whorl measues 29.54mm in diameter, 17.22mm in thickness, with the perforation measuring 9.68mm in diameter. It weighs 69.39g.

A lead spindle whorl of possible Medieval date. It is flat, discoidal in form with a central circular aperture and impressed rocker decoration on both faces. On one face (reverse?) the decoration comprises a border formed from a single band of rocker/corded decoration with two opposing groups of three bands running from the border to the central aperture. The opposite face (obverse?) has more extensive rocker decoration that covers the entire face. This comprises a similar outer border with two groups of bands running to the aperture. In addition there are several further unevenly spa…

A lead spindle whorl of probable Medieval to Post-Medieval date. It is conical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces, undecorated and with a central circular perforation. It measures 28.93mm in diameter, 11.42mm in height and weighs 50.74g. Simple lead weights such as this were utilised as spindle whorls over a long period of time from the Roman period onwards. The relatively fine manufacture of this object, and particularly the neatly drilled perforation, might indicate a Post-Roman date in the Medieval to Post-Medieval periods.
