Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete ceramic spindle whorl of probable early post-medieval date. The spindle is a flattened globular shape with a central circular hole, c.14mm in diameter. A groove runs around the midpoint of the outer face. It is made from a orange sandy earthenware fabric with angular quartz (<1mm) and red ironstone (<1mm) inclusions. There are traces of a green glaze in places on the surface, but most of this has worn away.. Very similar early post-medieval glazed stoneware spindle whorls imported from the Raeren kilns in Belgium are not uncommon finds, see PAS records: LON-81EDE9, BH

A complete Roman to post-medieval lead spindle whorl. It has a flat base and convex upper surface. There are transverse scratches on the curved upper surface, although these do not appear to form letters or any distinct pattern. The metal survives in good condition. Undecorated spindle whorls were in use from the Roman to post-medieval period. The small diameter of the hole may indicate a date towards the earlier of this chronology. Diameter: 31.70mm, thickness: 6.37mm, weight: 38.63g

Lead spindle whorl of medieval or post medieval date (c. AD 1066 - 1700). Domed in form with a circular base, slightly faceted sides and off-centre vertical circular perforation. The based exhibits a circumferential groove. Spindle whorls can be difficult to date as, with some exceptions, the general form seems to have changed little over time. Spindle whorls of this form are generally assigned a medieval to post medieval date range.

A somewhat corroded lead-alloy spindle whorl dating to the Medieval or Post-Medieval period, c. 1200-1550. The whorl is circular in plan and biconical in section, with a medium-sized circular aperture at its midpoint. Both faces of the whorl are decorated with intersecting linear motifs, inbetween which are raised pellets. Preserved in rather poor condition with heavily flaking surfaces, it measures c. 31.11mm in diameter, 12.72mm thick at its midpoint, and weighs 26.89g. A virtually identical spindle whorl is recorded on the PAS database as YORYM-E1F2E6. These objects were used throu…

A complete lead Roman to post-medieval spindle whorl. The object is discoidal with rounded edges and perforated with a wide hole in the centre. This hole appears slightly worn at one side suggesting that the object was suspended at some point. The surface is hevaily pitted and scratched.
