A complete cast lead alloy spindle whorl of probably late Medieval to early Post Medieval date, circa AD1400-1700. The spindle whorl is circular in plan with a central circular perforation and bi-convex in section. The central perforation has an approximate diameter of 7.3mm. A crescent shaped deep depression is present in the sidewall of the hole - probably a relic of casting. Both faces of the whorl are decorated with linear raised lines which radiate from the centre to the edges. The whorl is light grey with the raised areas being slightly darker grey in colour. Similar examples of…

A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably Roman (AD 50 - 400). The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and has a low bi-convex in cross section / profile. The central hole is circular and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 10.5mm. The upper and lower faces both have been cast with the same design. This consists of a series of six evenly spaced arcs framing the central hole - given the face of the whorl a flower design. Within each arc is a single pellet with further oval (tear drop) shaped pell…

A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably later medieval (1150-1600 AD). The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The central hole is broadly circular although it has two distinct wear facets. The hole is cast / set off centre and it has an internal diameter of 10.9mm. The find has a deep patina that is laminating in places - a deliberate cast design cannot be seen. The spindle whorl is a dull grey colour. Spindle whorls are used for a long period of time and as such are very difficult to date…

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable medieval date. The spindle whorl is circular in plan and bi-conical in profile. It measures 30.1mm in diameter, 9.57mm thick and weighs 33 grams. It has a central perforation which measures 9.6mm in diameter, now filled with dried earth. The whorl is decorated on both sides with linear ridges that radiate from the central hole. The style of decoration may be indicative of a medieval date, although it must be noted that dating of spindle whorls is often problematic when found outside of a secure archaeological context as their function did not alte…

A corroded circular cast lead object, probably a spindle whorl of medieval date. The whorl is has heavily moulded decoration: six triangles on each half creating lozenges joined by a central casting seam. The artefact has a central spindle hole with a regular diameter of c. 9.95mm, The object has corroded to a largely off-white colour. The spindle whorl is c. 11.3mm in thickness and weighs 41.4g. The dating of unstratified spindle whorls is very difficult; the date range offered is tentative and based on finds made in the vicinity. A spindle whorl recorded on this database (ref. SF…

A complete cast lead spindle whorl of probable medieval date. The spindle whorl is bi-conical with a large central perforation. One side of the spindle whorl is decorated with raised lines forming a four pointed star pattern with raised pellets in the internal and external angles. The other side is too worn to allow any decoration to be determined, raised pellets and some raised lines are visible. The metal has a white patina and is worn. The spindle whorl is 27.8mm in diameter, 13.45mm thick and weighs 35.8g. This type of decoration may indicate a medieval date, although a lack…
