A lead spindle whorl dating from the Post-Medieval period (AD 1500 - 1600). Cast biconvex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.06mm. Each side bears moulded decoration. One side has a slightly wandering circumferential rib at about the middle, and a series of 8 radial lines which pass from the rim of the central hole across the medial lines and joining an outer rim where the two halves meet. The other side has a geometric pattern of rhomboid shapes. The edge is damaged on one side. Forman (2018) suggests a primary use plying cord. Diameter: 30.31mm, Thickness: 9.03m…

A lead spindle whorl probably dating from the early Medieval period, about AD 850 - 1000, of Walton Rogers form A1. The unusually large whorl has a flat upper face and a rounded or domed lower face with straight sides. It has a neat central hole. The metal is crazed and friable. The patina is grey. The object is 34.4mm in diameter, 14.2mm thick and weighs 65.62g. The central hole is 10.4mm in diameter. Walton Rogers dates Form A1 whorls to the early Medieval period, and the size of the central aperture may indicate a date in the late Saxon period onwards.

A complete lead spindle whorl of unknown exact date (c. AD 43-1700). The object is roughly conical in shape with a flat base and a circular perforation truncating the centre of the object. The whorl is plain and undecorated with a white patina. Plain lead spindle whorls were in use from the Roman period to the present day, therefore without any contextual information it is difficult to apply an exact date. A large number of this type of spindle whorl have been recorded on the PAS database dated from the Roman to Post Medieval periods. Such examples include: DENO-D0AED4; WMID-32510A…

A cast lead or lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date (1 - 1650 AD), most probably later medieval (1150-1600AD). The spindle whorl is broadly circular in plan and rectangular / flat in cross section. The central hole is circular and has been cast / set off centre; it has an internal diameter of 7.5mm. There is no evidence of cast or incised designs present. The spindle whorl is a cream - white colour with an abraded and broken patina. The whorl has also been abraded and rolled in the plough soil and the edges have been damaged. Spindle whorls are used for a long perio…

A lead spindle whorl of Early Medieval to post-Medieval date. It appears to be Walton Rogers Form A1, suggesting a date of about AD 500 - 850 (owing to the fairly small central aperture). However, traces of cast decoration on the curved face may suggest a later date, up to AD 1600. One face is flat and one is convex. There is a central perforation which has a maximum diameter of 8mm. Traces of a design in relief are visible on the convex face. The artefact has a light cream patina. It is 26.1mm diameter, 10.3mm thick and 28.4g. A complete lead or lead alloy flat spindle whorl, of Roman to Post Medieval dating (AD 43 - AD 1650). The spindle whorl is sub circular in shape, and D shaped in profile. The central hole is sub circular in shape and has an internal diameter measuring 7.2 mm wide. Both faces are undecorated. The front face is convex and the reverse face is flat. The whorl is of a light cream colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail. Spindle whorls, as an artefact type, can be…

A lead-alloy spindle-whorl, possibly of medieval date, coated in a layer of lead corrosion products. Spindle whorls are a spinning technology developed to allow for the preparation of even threads for the creation of cloth or other textiles. The object is roughly circular, and pierced through the middle to form a flywheel shape. The edges and inner hole are surrounded by a raised encircling border, and between them is a depressed area which may possibly have been decorated with raised linear patterns but is now too degraded to be legible.
