A lead spindle whorl dating from the Post-Medieval period (AD 1500 - 1600). Cast biconvex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.06mm. Each side bears moulded decoration. One side has a slightly wandering circumferential rib at about the middle, and a series of 8 radial lines which pass from the rim of the central hole across the medial lines and joining an outer rim where the two halves meet. A lead spindle whorl probably dating from the early Medieval period, about AD 850 - 1000, of Walton Rogers form A1. The unusually large whorl has a flat upper face and a rounded or domed lower face with straight sides. It has a neat central hole. The metal is crazed and friable. The patina is grey. The object is 34.4mm in diameter, 14.2mm thick and weighs 65.62g. The central hole is 10.4mm in diameter. Walton Rogers dates Form A1 whorls to the early Medieval period, and the size of the central aperture may indicate a date in the late Saxon period onwards.

Spindle whorls are a spinning technology developed to allow for the preparation of even threads for the creation of cloth or other textiles. The object is roughly circular, and pierced through the middle to form a flywheel shape. The edges and inner hole are surrounded by a raised encircling border, and between them is a depressed area which may possibly have been decorated with raised linear patterns but is now too degraded to be legible.
