A complete lead spindle whorl of Medieval date (c.AD 1100-1500). The object is biconical with a central moulded aperture of diameter c.10.88 mm. Both sides bear a moulded decoration. On both sides this takes the form a four pointed flower with pellets at each angle. One side has the addition of a quatrefoil flower. The metal is a grey/cream in colour with a predominantly smooth patina. Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 7mm, Walton Rogers form A1, heavily patinated. The spindle hole size would be compatible with a Roman or Early Anglo-Saxon date while the mass would permit this to be used to spin a fine yarn. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Early Medieval, 43-850 Diameter: 19.8mm, Thickness: 5.9mm, Weight: 12.55gms

Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex or conical profile whorl with a central moulded and tapered aperture of diameter 9.7mm-8mm, possibly enlarged by distortion of the object, and with two deep nicks within one side of the hole, along with two small pits on the outer surface nearby. The former modification might hint at the conversion of a whorl to a line weight. A thick white patina has apparently spalled away from parts of the object. The original form might fall within Walton Rogers’ form A1, while, if a spindle whorl, the size of the hole may point to a Viking or An…

Lead spindle whorl, as kindly identified by the finder. A cast thin flat-sided whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter c.10mm, now distorted with an indented side; patinated overall. The mass could be apt to spinning a yarn while the spindle hole would admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date. The marked notching might arise from conversion of a whorl to a line weight with tying notch, but may equally be damage incurred adventitiously in antiquity. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 1000-1100 Diameter: 29.3mm, Thickness: 4.0mm, Weight: 20.66gms

Lead spindle whorl. Cast whorl of concavo-convex section with a moulded central aperture of diameter 9mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A1. Shrinkage lines around the hole suggest this object was cast in an open mould, with marked lipping around its upper edge. Patinated. The aperture size might admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date, though the form might also suggest a homemade copy taken from a small biconical whorl. A lack of imprinted decoration, however, may leave an earlier date more probable. The mass could be apt to spinning a fine yarn. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000 Diame…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9mm, expanded on one side by a split arising from either miscasting or reuse, perhaps as a line weight. One side bears a loose ring of moulded pellets scattered round the aperture; the other side bears pellets radially arranged in pairs. A pronounced rim marks where the two halves meet. Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast or miscast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10.9mm; patinated. If a whorl, the spindle hole size would admit an Anglo-Scandinavian date. The markedly eccentric profile would detract from function as a whorl, and might alternatively suggest this object to have been made as a line weight, a class of object usually assigned to the medieval period by this reporter. Lead spindle whorl. Cast possibly plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9.8mm, possibly Walton Rogers form A1. The surface is delaminated and flaked, possibly as a result of burning or of the unusually aggressive deterioration of the metal.
