Lead cast weight or spindle whorl. It is a short cylinder in shape, with straight, slightly tapering outside walls with a curve at the top towards the very large central hole. The bottom is flat. The hole is tapered from 10.58mm in diameter at the bottom to 9.92mm at the top. There is a small protrusion into the bottom of the hole where the base of the whorl has been slightly damaged. Cream in colour. Diameter 16.87mm, thickness 8.65mm, diameter of central hole 9.92mm - 10.58mm, weight 10.7g. Medieval biconical lead spindle whorl with moulded counter-relief decoration: One side of the carination decorated with two rings of pellets, the other with radiating lines and some oblique and transverse lines. On one face ten radial lines and on the other with five saltires inconsistently alternating with radial lines (at one point there is a sequence of four lines, and at another three oblique lines. Conical lead weight, probably a spindle whorl. It is very neatly made with a base 22 mm in diameter and a height of 14 mm. There is a central perforation which flares from 6 to 8 mm in diameter, so it would function perfectly well as a spindle whorl, but it weighs 27.39g (0.95 oz) so it could also possibly be a trade weight.
