A circular cast lead-alloy artefact, probably a spindle whorl. The whorl has a flat biconical section, with each cone truncated by the central perforation for attachment. The whorl is 29.75mm in diameter at its centre, 12.05mm thick, and the circular perforation for attaching to the spindle is 9.5mm in diameter, tapering slightly to 8.2mm. The upper face of the whorl is decorated with irregular tapering double ribs which radiate out. Within each pair of ribs there tends to be a pellet; there is a further pellet in the field between two of the pairs of ribs. On the lower face the decora…

Medieval lead spindle whorl of flattened bi-convex section. Both sides decorated in counter-relief with a ring of zig-zag and a pellet in each outer space. Diameter 32mm. Thickness 8mm. Perforation diameter 10mm. Weighing 44.21g / 1.56g. A roughly similar example was excavated from an early 16th-century context at the Augustinian Friary, Leicester, complete with its wooden spindle (Mellor and Pierce 1981, 139-40, fig.51 no.71). It is possible that the object was residual, but it is unlikely to have been very ancient when deposited in the context, in view of its completeness.
