A lead alloy spindle whorl or weight. It is flat on both faces, with rounded edges, D shaped in section. There is no apparent decoration. The central perforation is approximately 10mm in diameter. A number of similar examples have been recorded by the Berkshire FLO, one of which is BERK-4D6A2C. These are difficult to date without other evidence, and are considered by some to be Roman when in this form, this artefact is from an area of known Roman activity Dimensions: It is 28mm in diameter and 7mm thick, the central hole is 10mm diameter and it weighs 29.28g

A spindle whorl or possible weight. It is made of lead alloy, and is of a circular shape, one side of which is slightly domed. The central hole is off-centre, of diameter 9mm. There is no sign of decoration, the whole has an even light grey patina. Lack of diagnostic shape or decoration makes attributing a date difficult, and a wide range is specified here Dimensions: It is 34mm in diameter, the central hole is 9mm diameter, and it is 8mm deep. It weighs 48.39g

A lead alloy spindle whorl. It is a shallow biconical shape with a central hole of 10mm diameter. Each side is decorated with raised dots, arranged in concentric circles. A lead alloy spindle whorl. In section it comprises one shallow, truncated cone forming the top, with a rounded frame and a circular pedestal underneath. The top is decorated with raised four circular shapes, proud of the surface. There is also a raised line around the circumference and another around the central hole. These raised 'turrets' are seen on early medieval weights and gaming pieces, such as WAW-5760D1, which are ascribed to Viking period activity. The rear is more worn and the decoration is therefore more difficult to discern: the inner raised ped…

A lead alloy spindle whorl. It is biconical in section, and decorated with lines and circles, raised from the main body in casting. These radial lines are in sets of three, with four sets of three pellets between them, and a plain line moulded around the central hole. This design is very apparent on one side and is probably the same on the more worn side. It is light grey in colour. The large central hole may suggest a medieval date for this, Walton Rogers form C, AD 1100-1600 Dimensions: 30mm outside diameter, the central hole is 10mm. It is 9mm thick and wei…

Three lead alloy spindle whorls or weights. All three are undecorated and are flat on the bottom. The largest is domed with the hole off centre, and it shows some post depositional damage, The elongated one is flat on the top but the sides are slightly curved. This one has a raised border around the edge and the central hole, and there is a slight suggestion that it may have been decorated with the often seen dot and triangle motif, although this is by no means certain. The smallest has no decoration and the hole is off-centre. They all have the same light brown patina. …

A lead spindle whorl of Early-Medieval to medieval date, c.AD 700 - 1200. Walton Rogers Form B2. The spindle whorl is circular with two flat faces, rounded sides and a central hole running through it, and any decoration it might have had is no longer apparant. The metal has a light white patina with darker patches and is worn. The hole is 8mm in diameter, suggesting an early-medieval to medieval date (Walton Rogers, 1997, p.1731). It is also of Walton Rogers Form B2 which dates to AD 700-1200. Late Early Medieval to early Post Medieval perforated lead alloy weight. Probably a spindle whorl or net weight. It is circular in plan and sub-rectangular in section. It is undecorated. Without further context, it is not possible to closely date this lead weight. There appears to be old abraded damage to the weight, but the defect may have occurred at the casting stage as the object does not seem to have been manufactured with much care. It could date to anytime between c1000 and c1600 AD. Diameter of 24mm, thickness 5mm, perforation diameter 11mm, and the weight is 13.00g. The &quo…

A complete cast, lead or lead-alloy spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1, probably dating from the Early Medieval period, c. A.D. 850-1000. It is discoid in form with a circular perforation of internal diameter 9.73mm located slightly off centre. One face is flat and the other face is convex, but with vertical walls. There is no decoration. The whorl has a light creamy-white patina. Whorls of this type are illustrated in Walton Rogers, 2007 Cloth and Clothing in early Anglo-Saxon England, page 25, figure 2.18.
