A lead alloy spindle whorl or weight. It is flat on both faces, with rounded edges, D shaped in section. There is no apparent decoration. The central perforation is approximately 10mm in diameter. A number of similar examples have been recorded by the Berkshire FLO, one of which is BERK-4D6A2C. These are difficult to date without other evidence, and are considered by some to be Roman when in this form, this artefact is from an area of known Roman activity Dimensions: It is 28mm in diameter and 7mm thick, the central hole is 10mm diameter and it weighs 29.28g

A cast lead spindle whorl of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. Is has one flat and one domed face making it Walton Rogers form A1. The central hole has a diameter of 4.9mm. It has a cream coloured patina. It is 23.4mm in diameter and 8.1mm high. It weighs 20.5g.  Form A1 whorls are usually dated by Walton Rogers to AD 500 - 1000, but they also appear in the Roman period (Walton Rogers, 2007, page 25). Those with a central perforation of less than 6mm are more likely to be Roman, of 6-9mm are more likely to be early to mid Saxon, and those with a larger perforation …

A cast lead spindle whorl of Roman to Post-Medieval date (c.43-1700). Description: The spindle whorl is annular in plan and sub-cyclindrical in profile, with a slightly convex top that may have been decorated. The weight has a circular central hole.   Measurements: Diameter: 22.80 mm; Internal Diameter: 6.7 mm; Thickness: 4.77 mm; Weight: 14.93 g. Discussion: Spindle whorls are perforated weights from wooden drop spindles. Their weight helped give the spindle momentum in the twisting, or spinning, of fibres into yarn. For a similar e…

A spindle whorl made from a piece of Roman Samian ware pottery. It is slightly concave. There is no decoration, and the edges are chipped all of the way round the outside on the underside, and in a few discreet areas on the surface. The whorl may post date the Roman period as the central hole is not at the smallest end of the spectrum for a Roman date. One of very similar shape and dimensions is recorded as PUBLIC-DD674B Dimensions: 38mm diameter and 9mm thick, the central hole is 7mm diameter and it weighs 13.79g

A plano-convex, cast, lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1, probably dating from the Roman period, about AD 43 - 410. It has one flat face and one gently domed face. There is a central, circular perforation of internal diameter 5.3mm. It is undecorated and has a light cream patina. It is 26.11mm in diameter and 6.54mm thick. It weighs 18.82g. For reference, see Walton Rogers, 2007, Cloth and Clothing in Early Anglo-Saxon England, page 25. Walton Rogers suggests that whorls with a centre perforation of less than 6mm are likely to be Roman, and form A1 was used in the R…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast flat cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 7.4mm, creamy patinate overall, cf. Walton Rogers form B. A small lead probable spindle whorl of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. It is conical with a truncated top and a small central circular perforation of 2.2mm diameter. It fits into Walton Rogers form A2 if it is a whorl, but the size of the central hole may be too small, and the object may be a weight or bead instead. The object is 12.9mm long, 11.9mm wide, 8.8mm thick and weighs 5.62g.  The hole in the centre of the top has a diameter of 2.2mm. Form A2 whorls are most common from AD 700 - 1100, but those with a central hole smaller than 6mm diameter are more likely to b…

A complete lead spindle whorl of Roman to Post Medieval date. The whorl is discoidal in shape and sub-rectangular in cross section. The central hole is circular with an internal diameter of 6.63mm. No decoration is present on both surfaces. The whorl is a light grey colour with a slightly uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.  Measurements: diameter 22.7mm, thickness 4.8mm, weight 12.15 grams. Undecorated spindle whorls are very difficult to date precisely…

Lead spindle whorl fragment. One half of a cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded and tapered aperture of diameter 7.5-6.4mm, of Walton Rogers form A1. Shrinkage lines around the hole on the upper flat side suggest the object was cast in an open mould. Patinated overall including across the broken surfaces, so broken in antiquity. The spindle hole size would admit a Roman or Anglo-Saxon date; material of the Roman period is present while early medieval finds are not. Suggested date: probably Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 22.9mm, Thickness: 11.9mm, Weight: 15.39gms

A lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form B1 dating from the iron Age or Roman period, 600 BC - AD 410. It is circular and thin, with curved sides. The whorl is 24.9mm in diameter, 4.0mm thick and weighs 13.51g.  The central hole is 5.9mm in diameter. Walton Rogers suggests that Form B1 whorls were used from from Iron Age to Medieval periods, but the size of the central hole makes an Iron Age or Roman date more likely.
