A lead alloy spindle whorl or weight. It is flat on both faces, with rounded edges, D shaped in section. There is no apparent decoration. The central perforation is approximately 10mm in diameter. A number of similar examples have been recorded by the Berkshire FLO, one of which is BERK-4D6A2C. These are difficult to date without other evidence, and are considered by some to be Roman when in this form, this artefact is from an area of known Roman activity Dimensions: It is 28mm in diameter and 7mm thick, the central hole is 10mm diameter and it weighs 29.28g

A cast lead spindle whorl of possible Roman date, AD 43 - 410. Is has one flat and one domed face making it Walton Rogers form A1. The central hole has a diameter of 4.9mm. It has a cream coloured patina. It is 23.4mm in diameter and 8.1mm high. It weighs 20.5g.  Form A1 whorls are usually dated by Walton Rogers to AD 500 - 1000, but they also appear in the Roman period (Walton Rogers, 2007, page 25). Those with a central perforation of less than 6mm are more likely to be Roman, of 6-9mm are more likely to be early to mid Saxon, and those with a larger perforation …

A spindle whorl made from a piece of Roman Samian ware pottery. It is slightly concave. There is no decoration, and the edges are chipped all of the way round the outside on the underside, and in a few discreet areas on the surface. The whorl may post date the Roman period as the central hole is not at the smallest end of the spectrum for a Roman date. One of very similar shape and dimensions is recorded as PUBLIC-DD674B Dimensions: 38mm diameter and 9mm thick, the central hole is 7mm diameter and it weighs 13.79g

Lead spindle whorl. Cast discoid flat-sided or cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 5.6mm, Walton Rogers form B. A groove passes across the hole on one side, and might signal the conversion of whorl to line weight. Patinated. An incomplete Roman to Early Medieval cast lead spindle whorl, of Walton Rogers type A1, dating c. AD 43-1000. The spindle whorl is rounded conical in shape with one rounded face, tapering rounded sides and a circular perforation through the centre. The diameter of the perforation is 6mm diameter. The other face is damaged and now concave but was once probably flat or only slightly recessed. A circumferential groove partially extends around the outer edge on this face. The entire object is very worn and abraded. The patina is mottled light and dark grey and brown. The spind…

A cast lead spindle whorl of lines and pellets design. possibly Walton Type C. probably medieval. The object is bi-conical and carinated, (has a ridge around the circumference). both faces are convex. It is worn but appears to have a moulded relief pellet and line design. The patina is cream. Walton Rogers suggested a change in design over time: the post-11th-century whorls became rounder in shape with no flat faces, and were either globular, spherical, or rounded bi-conical known as Type/Form C. However Standley suggests a period of the 13th to 15th century for this…

A spindle whorl that may date from Roman to medieval date. Description: A complete but dented lead spindle whorl. The whorl is biconical in shape with a central circular perforation. One face of the whorl is decorated with a series of V shape engravings, with a dot engraved within each. A similar pattern appears to be engraved on the other face, but the pattern is less clear. The face is dented, which has eroded the decoration, with the damage focussed around the perforated area. This spindle whorl could be Roman to medieval in date as decorated spindle whorls have been …

Lead possible spindle whorl. A small flat-sided ring formed by the bending of a cast square-section bar into a ring with its ends butted to each other. Patinated. The aperture size might commend a Roman or Anglo-Saxon date; accompanying finds would hint at the former, while the method of construction is unusual and would forbid use as a line weight [a fine line could work its way out through the gap between butted ends]. The mass would make this an apt whorl to use to spin a fine yarn. Suggested date: possibly Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 18.1mm, Thickness: 5.6mm, Weight: 10.01gms

A lead alloy spindle whorl. The spindle whorl has a circular central perforation; from this hole the spindle whorl has a roughly D-shaped cross section with a flat base. It is undecorated. Undecorated spindle whorls are hard to date, and their use (in lead) spans the Roman to Medieval period. The shape of this spindle whorl is more reminiscent of those used in the Roman and Early-medieval periods. For similar see SWYOR-5A26C8.

Roman to Medieval (1st to 15th centuries) spindle whorl: A lead whorl which is circular in plan and in profile is D-sectioned with the base being flat. There is a central sub-circular perforation which is 7.55mm diameter. The surface is a light cream colour. It measures 25.09mm diameter and is 10.64mm thick. It weighs 26.77g. Spindle whorls, as an artefact type, can be hard to date accurately as they remained in use for a long period of time. The weight of the spindle whorl is suggestive of a thick wool thread being spun, as there is a direct relationship between the weight of t…

A cast lead spindle whorl probably dating from the Roman period, about AD 43 - 410. The whorl is of conical form, which does not fit clearly into Walton Rogers' typology, but is most similar to form A1. The object has a height of 16.1mm, a base diameter of 21.2mm, and weighs 32.5g. The central hole aperture has a consistent diameter of 4.5mm. The small size of the aperture, and the shape of the whorl, suggest a date in the Roman period. Alberti (2017) lists conical whorls as a shape known in the Roman period. See also Walton Rogers (2007, pp. 24-26).

Lead spindle whorl of uncertain date, possibly Roman or early medieval (c. AD 43 - 1000). The spindle whorl is slightly conical with a central circular perforation. It has a white patina. The spindle whorl is 23.01mm in diameter, 4.79mm in thickness and weighs 11.82mm. The diameter of the central perforation is 11.99mm. Lead spindle whorls are often difficult to date without archaeological context as a similar form was used from the Roman period into modern times. While discoid spindle whorls such as this one are known from securely-dated Roman contexts, and the small diameter of t…

A cast lead probable spindle whorl of discoidal shape and possible Iron Age or Roman date, about 100 BC - AD 410. It conforms to Walton Rogers form B1 (Walton Rogers 2007, pp. 24-25): both faces are flat; the sides are vertical, the faces being the same size; and the section is rectangular. It is 30.2mm in diameter and 3.7mm thick, with a central circular perforation 4.5mm in diameter. It weighs 24.01g. The smallness of the aperture suggests that this whorl might date from the Roman era or earlier. There is no decoration, and the object has a patchy grey and creamy white patina.
