A complete lead spindle whorl of Roman to Post-Medieval date (AD 43-1700). The object is circular and flat with a single, circular perforation. Both faces are pitted with circular and linear incisions and an outer, raised circumferentially running boarder. The metal light cream in colour with a pitted, corroded patina. Spindle whorls, as an artefact type, can be hard to date accurately as they remained in use for a long period of time, however lead alloy spindle whorls of this type are normally attributed to the Medieval period (c. AD 1100 to AD1450). The weight of the spindle w…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconical whorl, with moulded central aperture of diameter 5.5mm. Patinated overall, with an external brown staining over the patina, presumably from soil, with this coating removed in places by more recent abrasion. A small spindle would be characteristic of a Roman date, and the mass would permit this to be used to spin a fine yarn. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410. Diameter: 17.4mm, Thickness: 13.7mm, Weight: 16.92gms.

Both faces are decorated by four groups of 2 raised lines radiating out from the central hole towards the rim. Each group is equidistant apart and marking the four cardinal points of the disc. Midway between two of the groups of lines there is a further perforation running from the rim in to join the central main perforation. A lead alloy probable spindle whorl of probable Roman date. The whorl was probably originally plano convex but is now very worn. The central circular perforation has a maximum diameter of 4mm. This suggests that it could be of Late Iron Age or Roman date, though this is an unreliable method of dating. The flat side of the whorl has a slightly raised rim round the central perforation. This is found on Roman Coppergate Type A whorls. The whorl was also found in an area where many other Roman objects have been recovered, so a Roman date is suggested. The whorl has a grey patina. It is 16…
