A spindle whorl made from a piece of Roman Samian ware pottery. It is slightly concave. There is no decoration, and the edges are chipped all of the way round the outside on the underside, and in a few discreet areas on the surface. The whorl may post date the Roman period as the central hole is not at the smallest end of the spectrum for a Roman date. One of very similar shape and dimensions is recorded as PUBLIC-DD674B Dimensions: 38mm diameter and 9mm thick, the central hole is 7mm diameter and it weighs 13.79g

Fired clay spindle whorl fragment. Circular, probably globular with flattened upper and lower sides, object with a drilled [now] off-centre hole of diameter 6mm. Stained with pitch, paint or burning across part of its surface, possibly after being chipped. The small size would be suitable for a Roman spindle. Despite its large size, the lightweight material would make this whorl suitable for spinning a fine yarn. Suggested date: Roman, 43-410 Diameter: 30.2mm, Thickness: 15.9mm, Weight: 13.48gms.

Hole c.5mm diameter, the surface is chipped and spalled around the perforation. 10g. (Sherd ID 249)

A re-shaped piece of a samian vessel, probably re-used as a spindle whorl dating to the second or third century AD. Very abraded and burnt cup base, no slip remains apart from in the groove at the top of the foot-ring; possibly a Dr27 foot/base but really too worn to be certain. Only half survives, apparently broken across a ?drilled central hole, suggesting this base was shaped and re-used as a spindle whorl (sherd ID no 230) SAMCG
