A incomplete and damaged cast lead alloy spindle whorl, bi-conical, Walton Rogers form C2 dating from the late medieval or early post medieval period (c. AD 1450 - 1550). Both surfaces are decorated with radiating raised lines, probably originally six, however one edge of the whorl is missing, approximately 40% of the total mass, apparently from an old break as all surfaces are covered with a dusty grey-white patina. Diameter 28 mm, central perforation 8 mm, thickness 11 mm and weight 30.1 g

Lead possible spindle whorl, as kindly suggested by the finder. A roughly cast or mis-cast ring of wedge-shaped section with a [now] irregular central aperture of diameter 15mm. Slightly bent in profile. The plano-convex form might hint at this representing a failed attempt to make a new whorl using an old biconical whorl as the master; probably by pressing one half of it into an open unfired clay mould. One convex side may have been copied, but there is no trace of the linear or pelloidal decoration which might be expected to leave its traces and the hole is now excessively large. Pe…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with curvilinear traces of moulded ornament which appears to have included numerous pellets on either side, and with a central moulded aperture of diameter 9.6mm. Patinated. This object appears to anticipate the decoration of biconical whorls, but without linear components; it may be cast from another decorated whorl. A casting flaw appears on one side, near a locally prominent rim which is lost elsewhere. The mass may suggest a primary function plying cord. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600 Diameter: 27.7mm, Thickness: 12.1mm, Weigh…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.4mm. Moulded decoration on one side comprises groups of pellets, probably triangular arrangements of three pellets; the other side bears moulded radial lines producing a reticulate pattern, the governing motif perhaps being overlapping stars. A prominent moulded rim marks the meeting of the two halves. Patinated. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600 Diameter: 32.0mm, Thickness: 9.1mm, Weight: 38.72gms

A cast lead spindle whorl. of Walton Rogers form C2 dating from the late Medieval or early Post-Medieval period, about AD 1450 - 1550. It is bi-convex in form with a narrow median rim and a central, circular perforation of internal diameter 9.4mm. Both sides are decorated with a pattern of radiating ribs forming ten panels, each of which contains one, two or three small pellets. The whorl has a light grey patina. It is 30mm in diameter and 12.1mm thick. It weighs 29.65g. Walton Rogers quotes Ivens et al (1995) that spindle whorls decorated with dots are Post Medieval in origin. …

Lead and iron spindle whorl. Cast biconical whorl with rust blocking a central moulded aperture of diameter 9.4mm. Moulded decoration comprises radial lines with a pellet between each pair on one side, and radial lines with groups of three pellets in a triangular arrangement between them on the other. A prominent circumferential rim marks the meeting of the two halves. The moulded detail is soft, perhaps hinting this object was cast from another decorated whorl. Patinated. Whorls are occasionally reported with their holes blocked by decayed iron, though whether evidence of a primary, …

A cast lead spindle whorl dating from the late Medieval to Post Medieval period, about AD 1450 - 1550. It is bi-conical in shape and of Walton Rogers form C2. Both faces are decorated in moulded relief. One face has a series of zigzag lines. The lines form a faint indistinct star. The other face is less clear and has lines and pitting consistent with a worn raised design. There is a small amount of damage on one side, probably caused by ploughing to the edge of the piece. The patina is an overall mainly grey/brown. Measurements are: diameter 28.0mm, thickness 12.1mm and weight 34.…

A crude lead probable spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form C2 probably dating from the Medieval to Post Medieval period, about AD 1450 - 1550. The object appears sub-biconical in shape with pronounced dome on one side, with a significantly smaller dome on the opposite side around the perforation giving an asymmetrical appearance in cross section. Both faces are significantly worn, decorated or damaged with a series of irregular dents or dimples. The whorl has an overall mid-grey patina. Measurements are: diameter 35.6mm, thickness 9.8mm and weight 41.92g. The central perforation is o…

Lead spindle whorl fragment. A small fragment, perhaps one fifth, of a biconical spindle whorl with central moulded aperture. The object is identifiable from the moulded decoration of angled lines and pellets appearing on its outer surface, and by the wall of the central aperture. Patinated. The object has been burnt, and must also have been cut to achieve this highly unusual degree of reduction from its original robust form. The mass must argue a primary function plying cord. A sub-circular Medieval or Post Medieval lead spindle whorl dating from about AD 1450 - 1550. It is bi-conical, so Walton Roger's form C. Both faces are decorated with cast designs in relief of raised dots and radiating lines. There is also a median ridge round the circumference. The whorl is 26.5mm in diameter, 8.9mm thick and weighs 17.41g. The central perforation is 9.3mm in diameter. Walton Rogers suggests that form C is used from AD 1100, but cites Ivans et al, that those with dots are Post Medieval. A whorl with cast raised line decoration was recovered from a context of A…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 10mm. Moulded decoration comprises radial moulded lines with intermittent reticulate or net-like cross-hatched moulding infilling alternate cells which they define – on one side possibly to form a Greek or Maltese Cross. The other side bears similar reticulate moulding with less regular radial moulded lines between them. The radial lines may take a spiral form on one or both sides. The decorative convention resembles that seen on biconical whorls. The metal retains a grey tint, which may point to the…

A complete cast lead alloy biconical spindle whorl of post-medieval date, c. AD 1500-1800. Both surfaces are decorated with moulded radial lines separating the outer surfaces into six fields, each containing three pellets, as well as one motif of a chevron pattern of three converging lines pointing towards the whorl's central perforation. This perforation is moulded rather than drilled, is c. 10 mm in diameter, and is slightly distorted  rather than perfectly cylindrical, probably due to post-depositional damage. The outer whorl has a narrow …

A lead weight, possibly spindle whorl or loom weight. The weight is flat circular in shape with a central circular perforation. No decoration is present on either face. Loom weights and spindle whorls were used for a long periods of time (Iron Age to the early Post Medieval period). Undecorated examples can be difficult to date, although larger perforations can be indicative of an early medieval or later date.
