A complete lead-alloy spindle whorl of medieval to post-medieval date, c.AD 1200 - 1800. The spindle whorl is bi-conical with a central perforation running through it. Both surfaces are decorated with a series of irregularly spaced raised lines. Each resulting cell houses a single raised pellet. The metal has a mid-brown/white patina and is worn. The spindle whorl is 25.9mm in diameter, 12.2mm thick and weighs 10.1g. The perforation is 24.8mm in diameter suggesting a medieval date as per the thicker spindles of this period (Walton Rogers, 1997, p.1731). Ref: Walton Rogers, P., 1997.…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast biconvex whorl with a medial circumferential rim between its two halves, with a moulded aperture of diameter 11.2mm. Traces of a row of pellets between the rim and a flat area around the aperture appear on one side. The other side bears tint crescentic and angular marks: these may relicts of stamped decoration, but may equally be the result of chewing by a small child or vermin. Patinated, also dented on one part of the edge. It is uncertain whether this should be related to the early Medieval series of whorls or to Post-Medieval biconical whorls; moulded decor…

The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan, with a central, circular perforation extending vertically through the object (internal diameter 9.5 mm). The sides of the spindle whorl are slightly convex and have a repeating pattern of vertical grooves and ridges. There are four lozenge-shaped mouldings attached to the corners of the object; there is a pronounced seam around the girth of the object and is suggestive that it was manufactured by casting. The seam indicating a line between …
