A complete lead spindle whorl of Iron Age to Roman date. The weight is circular in plan with a flat top and base resulting in a flat disc. Both surfaces are undecorated and the object is perforated with a single central circular hole. The metal is a light cream in colour. Numerous similar examples have been recorded on the PAS database, for examples see: SWYOR-E92614, CPAT-5C2318 and IOW-CA98A0.

A complete cast lead spindle whorl or weight of uncertain date. The object is plano-convex with a flat base and domed top. A central perforation runs through the object and it is undecorated. The metal is a mid greyish-white colour and is worn. The object is 25.2mm in diameter, 9.2mm thick and weighs 32.5g. Lead spindle whorls and weights were commonly used from the Iron Age through to the post-medieval period and are difficult to date with any certainty without supporting archaeological context. The function of such objects is also difficult to determine as the forms are common…

A complete lead-alloy weight or spindle whorl of possible Iron Age to Roman date, c.50 BC - AD 410. The object is circular with a flat top and domed base and a central perforation running through it. All surfaces appear undecorated and are worn. The metal has a mid-grey/white patina with a pitted surface. The object is 19.3mm in diameter, 12.9mm thick and weighs 25.6g. The perforation is 6.3mm in diameter suggesting an Iron Age to Roman date as per the thicker spindles of this period (Walton Rogers, 1997, p.1731). Ref: Walton Rogers, P., 1997. An Iron Age clay spindle whorl dating to the period 800 BC- AD 43. The spindle whorl is of unusual design and is reel shaped with two sub-circular discs at either end which gradually narrow to a 'waist' in the centre. There is a vertical hole pierced through the centre of both discs. The spindle whorl is made of a reddish brown clay with about two-thirds of the surface of both ends and a joining section across the 'waist' coloured black. There are numerous small to medium flint inclusions and a number of large flint inclusions. The spindle whorl is crudely made, although the surface i…

Chalk spindle whorl, probably prehistoric in date, and most likely to be Iron Age. It is roughly circular, 16.5mm in thickness, and has a diameter of c.39mm. It has a central piercing c.10mm in diameter. The edges are slightly angular but smooth. Both faces have a number of scratch marks, probably through age.

A complete cast lead spindle whorl of uncertain date, but probably Iron Age or Roman. It is flat and disc shaped with a hole in the centre. The whorl has two flat faces, and the sides are straight. This makes it a Coppergate type B1 (Rogers, 2007, page 25). One face has radial lines incised into it. Although type B1 continues in use through the 5th. 6th and 7th centuries, ornamentation on Anglo-Saxon whorls is rare (ibid). It is also possible that it is medieval, but most whorls of this period are believed to have been decorated with patterns in relief. It is light brownish-white in c…

A lead alloy probable spindle whorl possibly dating from the Iron Age, about 400 BC - AD 43. The whorl is sub-spherical with a flattened face top and bottom. This would fit into type B2 in the Coppergate classification system, a type that was mainly used in the Iron Age, but continuing into the 7th century. The central aperture is circular and has a diameter of about 6mm. This makes it more likely that the whorl is Iron Age in date (Walton Rogers, 2007, page 23 - 25). However, whorls are notoriously difficult to date and a later date (up to the AD 1600) cannot be ruled out. The whorl …

A complete lead discoidal spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form B1, probably dating from the Iron Age or Roman, about 100 BC - AD 410. It has one flat face and one uneven face, with some depressed marks in it, and a particularly small central hole of 3.9mm diameter. Walton Rogers suggests that a aperture diameter of 4-8mm makes an Iron Age to Roman date more likely. Dimensions: Diameter 29.9mm, Thickness 6.3 mm and Weight 39.12g. It has a grey patina.

A lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form B3, possibly dating from the Iron Age or Roman periods, about 400 BC - AD 410. The whorl is bi-conical with two flat faces of equal size and carinated sides. Form B3 is thought to have been used from the Iron Age until the 6th century. All the faces are plain and undecorated. It has a circular central aperture of 4.9mm diameter. Walton Rogers suggests that hole sizes of under 6mm diameter can suggest an Iron Age or Roman date. The whorl is 19.8mm diameter, 16.1mm thick and weight 27.57g. It has a grey - white patina.

A possible lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form B2 probably dating from 100 BC - AD 410. The whorl is sub circular and has two flat faces of the same size, with curved sides, a form classified as B2, thought to be in use from the Iron Age onwards. The curved sides are thicker at one end, probably owing to wear and damage. It has circular central aperture which is off centre and measures 6mm diameter. Walton Rogers suggests that hole sizes of under 4-8mm diameter can suggest an Iron Age or Roman date. The whorl is 17.5mm diameter, 6.8mm thick and weighs 7.91g. It has a mottled white…

A small lead spindle whorl of uncertain date, probably Iron Age to Roman, about 100 BC - AD 410. It is of Walton Rogers form B2, having two flat faces of equal size and curved edges. The central perforation is 5.4mm diameter. The object is 18.5mm in diameter, 5.6mm thick and weighs 8.86g. One side of the outer edge is damaged; pitted and flattened, possibly by farm machinery. Walton Rogers suggests that form B2 was used from the Iron Age to medieval periods, but whorls with a central hole diameter of less than 6mm have a greater chance of being Iron Age or Roman.

A cast lead spindle whorl of discoidal form probably dating from the Iron Age to Roman periods, about 400 BC - AD 410. The whorl is circular with two flat faces and rounded sides. It has an approximately central circular aperture of 5.6mm diameter. It is of Walton Rogers form B2, which was in use form the Iron Age to the 12th century, but the size of the central aperture suggests an Iron Age to Roman date is more likely. A small sub circular lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form B2, probably dating from the late Iron Age to Roman period, about 400 BC - AD 410. The circular disc has rounded sides and a small central circular perforation of 5.6mm diameter. There is no decoration. It is 21.2mm in diameter, 6.4mm thick and weighs 18.33g. Form B2 whorls are thought to date from the late Iron Age onwards to the 12th century, but the small size of the perforation makes it more likely that this one is Iron Age or Roman.

A lead possibly Spindle whorl of possible Iron Age date, about 800 BC - AD 50. If it is a spindle whorl, it is of Walton Rogers Form C1 which has no flat faces and curved sides. This example is sub-spherical. Alberti notes that globular (in which she includes spherical) whorls are uncommon. The central hole has a diameter of 8mm. This is consistent with Walton Roger's suggests range of 4-8mm for Iron Age and Roman whorls, and she also notes that spherical whorls cease to be used in the Roman period. The object has a well developed brown patina. It is 21.9mm tall, 26.2mm diameter and 6…

A small cast lead spindle whorl probably dating from the Iron Age to Roman period, about 300 BC - 410. The whorl is discoidal with straight sides and a circular central aperture of 4.26mm. The patina is off white. An interesting element of this spindle whorl are four recessed lines radiating from the centre on one face, which appear to be evenly spaced and deliberate, suggesting decoration that is perhaps missing owing to wear on the rest of thr surface. This spindle whorl resembles Walton Rogers form B1. The height is 8.48mm, with a weight of 15.2g. The overall diameter is 15.1…
