A lead Early Medieval spindle whorl, dating from about AD 850 - 1000. It is of Walton Rogers form A1. The spindle whorl is sub-conical in form, with one flat face and one face with one rounded face. The whorl has a cream patina and is undecorated. Measurements are; diameter 26.9mm, thickness 6.9mm and weight 24.76g. The central hole has a diameter of 11.1mm.
Form A1 whorls are dated by Walton Rogers to AD 500 - 1000. Those with a central perforation of 11mm are more likely to be from the late Anglo Saxon period.

A complete lead alloy spindle whorl. It is plano-convex in shape with a domed side, rounded edges and a flat base with a central perforation No decoration is present on either side and it classified as Walton Rogers form A1 (Walton Rogers, 1997, p.1731/1738). The spindle whorl is circular in plan and has a sub-rectangular cross section. It fits into the Walton Rogers classification form B. The central hole is circular with an internal diameter of 9.5mm. No decoration is present on either side.
The whorl is cream in colour, with an even surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of some of the original surface detail.

It is unusually large, conical in form, with angled sides and flat surfaces but rounded corners, probably of Walton Rogers form A2. It is slightly damaged and distorted. The whorl is undecorated and has a light tan patina. The central hole is 11mm diameter.

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable early medieval date, AD 500 - 850. It is “D” shaped in cross-section, having one flat face and one rounded face. The perforation is tapered, top diameter: 6.5mm, bottom diameter: 9.5mm. None of the surfaces are decorated and all have a thick cream/brown patina. Lead spindle whorl. Cast cylindrical whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.2mm, either miscast or more probably part-melted, Walton Rogers form B. Eight wide radial cuts or grooves appear on one side of the whorl: this texture or decoration has recently been noted as a most unusual feature of another whorl reported recently from the immediate vicinity. Walton Rogers dates form B1 from AD 700 in York to 1200. A large central perforation makes a date from AD 850 onwards more likely.
