A domed lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A1, probably dating from the early medieval period from AD 850 - 1000. It has one flat face and one domed face, putting it in Walton Rogers form A1. There is no evidence of any decoration on the whorl. The surface is scratched and the whorl has a light grey patina. Diameter 28.2mm; inner perforation 9.5mm; thickness 8.7mm and weight 37.14g. The size of the central hole suggests a date from AD 850 onwards, while form A1 is known from AD 500 - 1000 (Walton Rogers). The whorl is of a similar type to SWYOR-FC71AF.

A lead spindle whorl of probably Early Medieval or Medieval date, about AD 850 - 1200. It is of Walton Roger's form B2, having two (fairly) flat faces and curved sides. The whorl has a mid grey overall patina. It is not decorated, however the surface is somewhat pitted and scratched. The whorl is 23.9mm in diameter, 11.3mm thick and weighs 33.60g. The central perforation is 10.0mm in diameter. Walton Rogers suggests that Form B2 whorls appear in York in the 700s, and are common from AD 900, with evidence of their use into the 12th century. The size of the central ap…

Lead probable spindle whorl. Cast discoid whorl, originally of flat cylindrical form, with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.4mm, cf. Walton Rogers form B. The object now has at least two flat facets on its edge, though has been patinated since this alteration. Shrinkage lines around the hole on one side may suggest casting in an open mould. For a spindle whorl, the large hole might indicate use with an Anglo-Scandinavian spindle, though use as or conversion to a line weight remains possible. Suggested date: Possibly Early Medieval, 1000-1100 Diameter (long axis): 29.2mm, Thic…

Lead spindle whorl. Cast, or rather mis-cast, spindle whorl of plano-convex section with a central moulded aperture of diameter 8.4mm, cf. Walton Rogers form A1. An ancient scratch passes across the flat side on one side of the hole. Thinner and denser patina and encrustation have collected, the latter in more limited patches. Chipped. If ever used as a whorl, the aperture size might hint at an Anglo-Scandinavian date. However, it seems unlikely this object would have been used by any self-respecting spinster, though the thicker encrustation might have arisen from immersion as an impro…

A cast lead spindle whorl of probable Early Medieval date, AD 500 - 1000.  It has one flat face and one rounded face (Walton Rogers Form A1). It is 19.7mm in diameter, 9.7mm thick, and weighs 17.15g. It has a central, circular perforation with an internal diameter of 4.4mm. Walton Rogers 2007 suggests that spindle whorls with small perforations are more likely to be either Iron Age or Romano British, but the A1 form does not appear to have been used in the Iron Age and Roman periods, so an early Medieval date is suggested, probably the early Saxon per…
