A lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers form A2 dating from AD 850 -1100. It is circular, with two flat faces of different sizes and curved sides. The whorl is 20.8mm in diameter, 6.5mm thick and weighs 11.89g.  The central hole is 9.6mm in diameter. Lead possible spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex or conical profile whorl with a central moulded and tapered aperture of diameter 9.7mm-8mm, possibly enlarged by distortion of the object, and with two deep nicks within one side of the hole, along with two small pits on the outer surface nearby. The former modification might hint at the conversion of a whorl to a line weight. A thick white patina has apparently spalled away from parts of the object. The original form might fall within Walton Rogers’ form A1, while, if a spindle whorl, the size of the hole may point to a Viking or An…

A cast lead spindle whorl of Walton Rogers type B2, probably dating from the Early Medieval or Medieval period, about AD 850 - 1200. It is flat and discoid with curved sides and a central, circular perforation of internal diameter 10.2mm. It is 25.2mm in overall diameter and 5.5mm thick. It weighs 16.7g. Spindle whorls of this type are illustrated in Walton Rogers, 2007, Cloth and Clothing in early Anglo-Saxon England, page 25.
