A hand carved chalk spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is roughly D-shaped in cross-section with a large sub-rounded hole set slightly off-centre. There is no decoration on the whorl and it has suffered some damage. Undecorated spindle whorls, especially those made from natural materials are very hard to date without any supporting contextual information; a chalk spindle whorl was found in the grave of a 7th century (Anglo-Saxon) female 20 miles away, but generally spindle whorls can date from prehistoric times through to the Medieval era.
